The Watch

Here we have a 2021 Breitling B09 Chronograph 40 "Pistachio" Dial AB0930D31L1P1 that pays homage to three generations of creators: Léon, Gaston & Léon's grandson, Willy Breitling. The Premier line was introduced in 1943, moving its chronographs from a tool watch to an elegantly designed timepiece. With a 40mm stainless steel case, the thick tapered lugs have a lug-to-lug length of 46mm and a case thickness of 13mm, giving the watch an impressive wrist presence. Down the right side, we have the rectangular chronograph pushers and a signed crown in the centre. A smooth bezel holds a box sapphire crystal AR coated on both sides above a distinctive Pistachio Green dial; an outer Tachymetre and an inner minute track are precisely printed, and applied Arabic numeral indices mark the hours; at 3 o’clock, a 30-minute recessed register and at 9 o’clock, the small second recessed register. Syringe hands filled with Super-LumiNova complemented by a tapered chronograph hand, at 12 o’clock, an applied “B” and Breitling 1884 are printed underneath. At 6 o’clock, Chronograph Premier completes this heritage-inspired bi-compax. On the reverse, a screw-down exhibition case back, inside a COSC-Certified manually wound Breitling Cal. B09, 47 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour with a column wheel mechanism and vertical clutch, this movement was introduced in 2019 and is the only version of the CAL.B01 that does not have a date.  The watch comes fitted on its original Breitling 20mm leather strap with a signed folding clasp and also comes with its Breitling presentation box and papers.

Personal Note

When this model was released with a few different dial colours I was impressed but not sold on it, having one in hand and on the wrist, this watch is a game-changer for Breitling in my opinion! It wears beautifully and looks fantastic on and off the wrist, if they keep going with variations of this they will truly build a watch that everyone will love and Breitling can work its way back to being the name it once was in the industry. Do not hesitate to book an appointment to see this one in the metal for yourself!

The Brand

Breitling was established in 1884 by Leon Breitling in the Swiss Jura Mountains; in 1915, Gaston Breitling introduced a pusher at 2 o’clock to start, stop and reset the chronograph; Leon later moved the reset to a pusher at 4 o’clock. In 1939, Breitling shipped a huge quantity of chronographs to the Royal Air Force; during the war with Germany surrounding Switzerland, Leon and some friends created a makeshift runway near their factory; planes would use the car's headlights as a guide to land. Once on the ground, they were quickly loaded, taking off before the Germans knew what was going on. They introduced the “Navitimer,” a navigation computer, in 1952, which was used to calculate a flight plan. In 1969, they collaborated with Heuer, Burne, and Dubois-Depraz on a top-secret project called Project 99; together, they developed one of the first self-winding chronograph movements. Breitling stands for high precision, outstanding performance, and functionality. During the early days of space exploration, Lt. Commander Scott Carpenter went around the earth three times whilst wearing a modified Navitimer. In 2017, they were sold to CVC Capital Partners, Europe's largest private equity firm.
