The Watch

Here we have a 2020 TAG Heuer Monza Chronograph Black CR2080 is inspired by their Heuer black case chronograph of 1976, this watch has a 42mm polished and brushed numbered square stainless steel cushion case, with a black tough PVD coating giving the watch a stealthy aesthetic and a resistance to scratches, tapered lugs and a chamfered edge lead to a lug-to-lug length of 49mm and a case thickness of 13mm ensuring a comfortable fit on your wrist. Down the right side, we have polished steel piston chronograph pushers and a signed crown in the centre. The bevel-edged, polished, and brushed bezel holds a flat crystal that sits above the dynamic black dial. An outer Tachymeter/Pulsometer chapter ring surrounds a minute track precisely executed with large lumed baton indexes that mark the hours; at 3 o'clock, a running seconds register with a red stick hand; at 6 o’clock, a framed date window, and finally, at 9 o’clock, a 30-minute register with red highlights and white hand. White sword hands have lume infill; at 12 o’clock, we have the “Monza Heuer” motif and at 6 o’clock, “Automatic Calibre 17”. On the reverse, a screwed-down case back with the details of the watch around its polished edge and in the centre Monza and in red the vintage “Heuer” motif engraving, inside an automatic TAG Heuer Cal. 17 movement (based on the ETA 2894-2), 37 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour. It comes fitted on a TAG Heuer 22mm leather strap with a push-button released deployant buckle; the watch also comes with its TAG Heuer presentation box and paperwork.

Personal Note

The TAG Heuer Monza Chronograph in black, reference CR2080, is a watch that rarely comes up for sale, and the prices have steadily increased over the years as the appreciation for this model increases. When originally released, I believe people overlooked it, and therefore it wasn't the biggest hit, those can often be the hidden gems in years to come. Inspired by the all black chronographs of Heuer's past, this is a faithful 'homage' to that past. Do not hesitate to add this wonderful example to your collection today!

The Brand

Edouard Heuer founded The Heuer Watch Company in 1860 in St. Imier, Switzerland. Chronographs have been the mainstay for Heuer and later TAG Heuer. Featuring many models and configurations, expanding the possibilities to the full. In 1958, Jack Heuer, Edouard’s son, joined the company. In 1962, the first generation of Autavia was launched. Famously worn in the 1970s by Formula One drivers such as Derek Bell, Jacky Ickx, Emerson Fittipaldi, Clay Regazzoni and Mario Andretti, and many more.
They were the sponsor of the 1985 Marlboro McLaren Formula 1 racing team; then, after 30 years, in 2015, they proudly sponsored RED Bull Racing. LVMH  Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy S.A. offered a bid in 1999 that was accepted by TAG Heuer. From 2025, they will return to be the official timekeepers for F1, with LVMH signing a 10-year contract.
