The Watch

Here we have a 2020 Glashütte Original Sixties Annual Edition 1-39-52-14-02-04 that is inspired by their creative dress watches of the retro 1960s, the 39mm polished stainless steel case sits comfortably on your wrist with elegantly tapered lugs, and a lug-to-lug length of 45mm and a case thickness of 9.5mm ensures a comfortable fit. On the right side is a signed crown, a smooth polished bezel holding a domed crystal above a stunning sunburst glacier blue graduated domed dial, created by painting the dial dark blue to produce its dark edge, then coated in a layer of glacier-blue lacquer. An outer minute track surrounds the striking 60s stylised Arabic numeral and baton indices coated in SuperLumiNova mark the hours, slender baton hands tipped in SuperLumiNova are complemented by a tapered sweeping second hand. At 12 o’clock we have the  Glashütte Original motif completing this vintage-inspired dress watch. On the reverse a screwed-down exhibition case back showcasing an automatic Glashütte Original Cal. 39-52, 25 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour, the movement is decorated with Glashutte stripes, bevel edges, polished accents and its iconic 21k gold edged double-G skeletonised rotor. The watch comes paired with its 19mm brown strap and signed pin buckle, and this watch is sold with its original Glashutte box, swing tag, travel case and Glashutte paperwork.

Personal Note

I have always found these Glashütte Original Sixties models to be some of the most underrated and underappreciated references from the brand, the design is wonderful with beautiful colours whilst remaining relatively under the radar, and the movement and finishing are exquisite, as you would expect, and the price is incredibly fair in my opinion. I would not hesitate to book an appointment to see this one in the metal for yourself, but be warned, you just may walk out with it on your wrist and a huge smile on your face.

The Brand

In 1845 Ferdinand Adolph Lange established his workshop in the German town of Glashütte. Glashütte (Sa.) limited company was registered in 1918, producing pocket watches in 1921 with the words, “Original Glashütte” on the dial. In 1927, this company would become known as UROFA, producing movement blanks or ébauches. At the same time, a second company, UFAG, built and distributed watches. It was at the same time that the name “Glashütte Original” first appeared on the dial of a wristwatch. After the joining of West and East Germany in 1990, VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe became Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe GmbH. In 1994, Heinz Pfeiffer a Bavarian businessman took over the business and brought back the name “Glashütte Original”. This company was eventually sold to the Swatch Group in 2000. Today, Glashütte Original continues to produce elegant timepieces.
