The Watch

Here we have a 2010s Luminox P-38 Lightning Automatic Chronograph, named after the iconic WWII Lockheed Martin twin-boomed fighter plane, with a satin brushed 45mm cushion-shaped stainless steel case, thick curved lugs with a lug-to-lug length of 53mm and a case thickness of 17mm give the watch an impressive and comfortable fit on your wrist. Down the right side, we have the sloped chronograph pushers and a signed deep-knurled screw-down crown that crown guards protect. The unidirectional bezel has a Tachymeter scale insert holding a flat sapphire crystal above a matte black dial. An outer minute track with Luminox Light Technology (LLT) made up of self-powered micro gas light tubes is precisely executed surrounding large Arabic numerals marking the hours, at 3 o’clock a framed day/date, at 12 o’clock a 30-minute register, at 6 o’clock a 12-hour register and finally at 9 o’clock a small seconds. Brushed steel hands have self-powered micro gas light tubes for lume and are complemented by a tapered chronograph hand. At 3 o’clock, we have the Luminox motif and “P38 Lightning 200 metres” complete this aviation sports watch. On the reverse a screw-down case back with the details of the watch engraved around its edge and an embossed Lockheed Martin P-38 Lightning, inside an automatic Valjoux Cal. 7750, 25 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour. The watch comes paired with its 28mm Luminox black leather strap and signed pin buckle plus a 28mm rubber strap and comes with its Luminox case.

Personal Note

This Lumonix P-38 Lightning, named after the iconic WWII Lockheed Martin twin-boomed fighter plane and proudly displays a model of the plan on its case back in incredible detail. The watch features a huge and bold 45mm case that has a serious heft on the wrist whilst also being surprisingly comfortable thanks to the relatively stubby lugs, powered by the workhouse Valjoux 7750, this watch also offers incredible value for money. I would not hesitate to add this watch to your collection today!

The Brand

Luminox is a watch company founded in 1989 by Barry Cohen and Richard Timbo. The company's name is derived from the Latin words "Lumi" and "Nox," meaning light and night, respectively. This reflects their mission to create a self-illumination system.
Luminox watches are Swiss-made and known for their functionality and durability. The brand's turning point came in 1992 when it collaborated with US Navy SEAL officer Nick North to create a watch specifically designed for nighttime missions. This resulted in the Luminox Navy SEAL watch, which was launched in 1994 and quickly gained recognition for its high quality. The success of the Navy SEAL watch opened doors for Luminox, and by 1994, elite units like the US Coast Guard, NYPD, and Singapore Air Force were sporting Luminox watches. The brand also made its way into Hollywood films such as "GI Jane" (1997) and "Ocean's Eleven" (2004). Mondaine has owned Luminox since 2016 and became part of the Mondaine Group in 2020. Today, Luminox continues to be a popular choice for people who value high-quality, durable watches.
