The Watch
Here we have a 1990s Girard Perregaux Vintage 1945 Chronograph 18ct Gold 2599 with its distinctive polished 30mm 18ct Yellow Gold case, which, thanks to the triangular tapered lugs, sits comfortably on your wrist. The flanks subtly curve; on the right side, we have the chronograph pushers and a stepped crown with deep knurling in the centre. A smooth bezel holds a slightly curved crystal above a white dynamic dial with attractive Art Deco elements, creating a unique aesthetic. Gold-toned Arabic numerals surround an inner minute track, intersected by a 30-minute register at 3 o’clock and a small second register at 9 o’clock with red and black numerals and a thermally blued hand, elegant Dauphine hands are complemented by a red arrow pointed chronograph hand, at 12 o’clock we have the Girard Perregaux motif and at 6 o’clock “Automatic” completes this vintage-inspired bicompax timepiece. On the reverse, an 18ct Yellow Gold screw-down case back engraved with the details of the watch, inside an automatic Girard Perregaux Cal. 3080, 38 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour, a column wheel chronograph movement.
Personal Note
I love it when a watch comes across my desk that I had never seen before or even knew existed, this Girard Perregaux Vintage 1945 Chronograph, reference 2599, in solid 18ct yellow gold, is one of those watches. Powered by the automatic Girard Perregaux Cal. 3080 and featuring a 30mm by 47mm rectangular case, this is a hunk of gold on the wrist and you certainly know you are wearing it, but it really does wear beautifully. I am seriously impressed with this model. If you are in the market for a solid gold, rectangular automatic chronograph, look no further, this one ticks all the boxes so snap it up today!
The Brand
The brand’s origins date back to Geneva, Switzerland, in 1791, where Jean-François Bautte, a fine pocket watchmaker and goldsmith, built workshops and created his first watches. It wasn’t until 1906 that the two companies became acquainted when Constant Girard-Gallet bought the Bautte company from Jacques Bautte, and the modern Girard-Perregaux was formed. The brand name was established in 1856 in the town of La Chaux-de-Fonds, thanks to the marriage of Constant Girard and Marie Perregaux.
