The Watch

Here we have a 1975 Mappin Day/Date Automatic ETA 2789 with a curvaceous 34mm 9ct Yellow Gold case, elegant tapered lugs lead to a lug-to-lug length of 39mm and a case thickness of 10mm, ensuring a comfortable fit on your wrist. On the right side is a coin-edged crown. The slim, smooth bezel holds a domed crystal above a domed white dial, an outer minute track surrounds gold stick indices marking the hours; at 3 o’clock, a day/date window, gold baton hands tipped with Tritium are complemented by a tapered second hand. At 12 o’clock, we have the Mappin motif, and at 6 o’clock, “25 Jewels Automatic Incabloc” completes this sophisticated dress watch. On the reverse, a 9ct yellow gold snap-off case back, inside an automatic ETA Cal. 2789, 17 jewels, beating at 21,600 beats per hour, this quality movement released in 1969 until 1976 has a quick-set day/date. The watch comes paired with a well-suited aftermarket 18mm leather strap and pin buckle.

Personal Note

This Mappin Day/Date is powered by the automatic workhorse ETA 2789, all this cased in a wonderful 34mm 9ct gold case to add some extra weight and luxury on the wrist. The great thing about watches like this is we can date the production of the case thanks to the hallmarks, this one being from 1975, a potential perfect birth year watch for someone out there wanting something different to the crowd. I would not hesitate to add this to your collection today!

The Brand

Mappin & Webb has a rich history dating back to 1775 when Jonathan Mappin founded it in Sheffield. In 1860, the company name changed to Mappin, Webb & Co. after John Mappin was joined by George Webb, his brother-in-law. By the 1890s, Mappin & Webb had expanded internationally to cities including Johannesburg, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Biarritz, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Cairo, and Bombay. The company shifted its headquarters from Oxford Street to Regent Street in 1956. They have held Royal Warrants since 1897, and have made luxury jewellery for many heads of state, and are custodians of the Crown Jewels. Unfortunately, a hostile takeover in the late 1950s resulted in the closure of many of their stores and changes in ownership. In 1963, a merger with Elkington and Walker & Hall led to the company being named British Silverware Ltd. Ten years later, in 1973, Sears Holdings Ltd acquired Mappin & Webb. Today, they are part of the Watches of Switzerland retail group, and their Boutiques continue to offer luxury jewellery and timepieces from renowned brands such as Patek Philippe, Rolex, Jaeger-LeCoultre, and Omega.
