The Watch

Universal Genève was founded in 1894 in Le Locle, Switzerland as Universal Watch, by two Horology students Ulysse-Georges Perret and Numa-Emile Descombes. By 1919 they had moved their operations to Geneva and renamed the brand Universal Genève. They have been owned by Stelux, a Hong Kong investment group, since 1989.

As a response to the ever-growing threat of electronic watches to the manufacturers of mechanical watches, Longines collaborated with 20 Swiss brands such as Rolex and Patek Philippe formed Centre Electronique Horloger (CEH). Prototypes began in 1967, with production starting in 1968.

Our Universal Genève Unisonic 852100/01 has a 33.5mm stainless steel tonneau case. Stubby bevel-edged lugs provide a comfortable fit on your wrist. On the right side a crown with the Universal Genève logo. A flat crystal sits above a cream dial with baton indexes marking the hours. At 3 o’clock a date window. Chrome baton hands have lume infill complemented by a sweeping tapered center seconds hand. Text at 12 o’clock a tuning-fork around the Universal Genève logo and at 6 o’clock Unisonic (Unisonic refers to the tuning-fork movement). On the reverse, a screw-down case back. Inside a Universal Movement 1-52, electric tuning-fork model based on the Bulova 2181F 15 Jewels. It has hacking and quick-set date functions. Introduced in 1965 as the Cal. 218 it was thinner than the Cal. 214 found in the first Bulova Accutron watches. The watch comes fitted on a 19mm leather strap.

Personal Note

A brand that appears to be growing within the collecting circles weekly, Universal Geneve, mainly the polerouters but all boats rise as they say. I am excited to bring this fantastic example to the market, whilst some scoff at the idea of a "quartz" watch these electronic watches really revolutionised the industry, whether that be for the good or the bad, they woke up a repetitive industry and got them back on their feet.
