The Watch

Here we have a rare early classic 1952 Universal Genève Monodatic Bumper Automatic with a polished 35mm round stainless steel case that gently curves over your wrist thanks to the sculpted finely tapered drilled lugs, and a lug-to-lug length of 43mm and a case thickness of 10.5mm ensures a comfortable fit. On the right side a domed coin-edged crown. The smooth polished bezel holds a domed crystal above a striking silver two-toned sector dial. Applied Arabic and dagger indexes mark the hours surrounding pips around the centre; at 3 o’clock, a date window with Cyclops magnification and numerals in red and black, elegant polished Dauphine hands sit majestically in the centre above a beautifully executed sub seconds at 6 o’clock, perfectly balancing this sophisticated dress watch, at 12 o’clock we have the Universal Genève motif and “Monodatic” printed above the sub-seconds. On the reverse, a screw-down case back, inside a bumper automatic UG Cal. 138C, 17 jewels. It comes paired with an 18mm leather strap and pin buckle.

Personal Note

With the purchase of Universal Genève and the re-release of the Polerouter the future is looking exciting and bright for the brand, as collectors we are imagining what will be next and what iconic models they will tribute. Regardless, this incredible Monodatic from 1952, featuring an early bumper automatic UG calibre 138C, will forever be legendary. Examples that are this good don't come up often, so when they do, you jump on them!

The Brand

Universal Genève was founded in 1894 in Le Locle, Switzerland, as Universal Watch, by two Horology students, Ulysses-Georges Perret and Numa-Emile Descombes. By 1919, they had moved their operations to Geneva and renamed the brand Universal Genève. They have been owned by Stelux, a Hong Kong investment group, since 1989.
