The Watch

Here we have a 1950s Glycine Automatic 41 ETA 2452 Date Crosshair Dial with a 34mm round stainless steel case that sits comfortably on the wrist thanks to its tapered angled drilled lugs, 42 mm lug-to-lug length, and 10 mm case thickness. On the right side is a coin-edged crosshatch crown. The smooth bezel holds a domed crystal above a cross-hair silver dial, and an outer minute track surrounds applied slim baton indexes marking the hours; at 3 o’clock, a framed date window, elegant steel Dauphine hands are complemented by a tapered second hand, at 12 o’clock we have the Glycine motif and at 6 o’clock “Automatic 41” completes this vintage dress watch. On the reverse, a solid case back, inside an automatic ETA Cal. 2452, 25 jewels, beating at a leisurely 18,000 beats per hour, this workhorse movement was in production from 1956 until 1974. The watch is paired with a well-suited 18mm aftermarket strap and pin buckle.

Personal Note

I often say that there are still hidden gems to be found in the vintage watch world that won't break the bank, this Glycine Automatic 41 featuring a wonderful silver crosshair dial in 34mm is one of those gems. Powered by the automatic ETA 2452 with a date, it is a workhorse that is ready to be worn and enjoyed whilst also providing the ability to be dressed up and look at home against a formal suit. Do not hesitate to add this watch to your collection today!

The Brand

Glycine, founded by Eugène Meylan, is a brand that has been around for a long time since 1914 (A rough time to start a company) but is most known for its Airman series, which debuted in 1953 and was initially designed for pilots with useful 24-hour analogue dials and rotating bezels with GMT functions. It was the first to offer this functionality. Worn by many servicemen during the Vietnam War, they also went into space in 1965 with Gemini 5 and astronaut Pete Conrad, who wore the Airman on his space suit, recording a new space endurance record of 7 days, 22 hours, 55 minutes and 14 seconds, beating the Russians by a couple of days. In 1967, they introduced their Crown motif to the world. In that same year, they produced the Glycine Combat watch, which used the same hacking seconds mechanism as the Airman. Since 2016, they have been part of the Invicta Watch Group.
