The Watch
Here we have a 1940s Movado 18ct Yellow Gold Triple Date 4776 with a stunning 18ct Yellow Gold 32mm case that curves over your wrist with finely tapered lugs, and a lug-to-lug length of 38mm and a case thickness of 10.5mm ensures a comfortable fit. Down the right side, we have the pushers for the date and month and a domed crown in the centre. A smooth bevel-edged bezel holds a domed crystal above a remarkable white early refinished dial. A date ring in black ink that surrounds gold-toned Arabic numerals and pips marking the hours, at 3 o’clock we have the month window and at 9 o’clock a day window, elegant Yellow stick hands with a red lollipop counterweighted hand indicating the date and at 6 o’clock a small seconds sub-dial, at 12 o'clock the Movado motif completes this striking Triple Date timepiece. On the reverse, an 18ct Yellow Gold snap-off case back complete with case maker stamp and hallmarks, inside a manually wound Movado Cal. 420, 15 jewels, beating at a leisurely 18,000 beats per hour, this base movement has a calendar module designed by Frédéric Piguet, fitted with a Breguet hairspring, first introduced in 1947 and remained in production until 1954. The watch comes paired with a well-suited 16mm leather strap.
Personal Note
It is no secret that I am a huge fan of solid gold Movado's and I'm fortunate enough to have a few lovely examples in my personal collection, so it will be no surprise I am a huge fan of this wonderful 18ct Yellow Gold Triple Date model in 32mm which looks amazing on the wrist! Due to the size, the price is insanely good, so don't hesitate to add this gem to your personal collection.
The Brand
Achilles Ditesheim at the age of 19 founded LAI Ditesheim & Freres SA in 1881. With the help of 6 watchmakers, he built a workshop in the small village of La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. In 1905 Achilles Ditesheim renamed his company Movado meaning “always in motion” in the international language of Esperanto. In 1947 Nathan George Horwitt created the single-dot watch dial. In 1960 Horwitts' original design became the first watch dial ever to be accepted by the Museum of Modern Art, New York. In 2017 Movado Group purchased the OliviaBurton brand based in London. It is one of the fastest-growing fashion watch and jewellery brands in the UK. In October 2018 Movado Group acquired MVMT which specialises in selling quartz watches, sunglasses and jewellery.
