The Watch
Here we have a Credor Seiko Phoenix Tetsuya Kumakawa GCBG987 Limited to 1000 pieces, the 39mm stainless steel case curves over your wrist with thick tapered drilled lugs. Brushed and polished surfaces transition with elegant lines, encompassing the elegance of a Credor with the mechanical prowess of a Grand Seiko. Down the left side “Limited Edition” is deeply engraved and a lug-to-lug length of 46.5mm and a case thickness of 12.5mm give the watch an impressive wrist presence. Down the right side, we have a crown at 2 o’clock pull out to adjust the hour hand independently, a crown at 4 o’clock to adjust the 24-hour chapter ring and finally at 3 o’clock a screw-down crown to adjust the time pull out to position 3 and pull out the crown to position 2 quick-set date by rotating the crown anticlockwise, the Retrograde day is adjusted by rotating the crown clockwise. Pull out the crown to position 1 to hand wind, decorated with an inset cabochon and protected by crown guards. The bidirectional bezel has the abbreviated GMT world cities deeply engraved into it with a red Tokyo in respect to the Seiko laboratory in Tokyo. A flat sapphire crystal has a chamfered edge that lifts it slightly above the bezel, the glossy black lacquer dial has a 24-hour rotating chapter ring surrounding applied bullet-shaped indexes infilled with luminance marking the hours. At 3 o’clock we have a Retrograde day fan crescent, at 6 o’clock a date register and at 9 o’clock a 24-hour register each outlined in steel and raised markers creating depth and interest to this sophisticated travel watch. Sword's hands infilled with luminance complemented by a red arrow point sweeping second hand and at 12 o’clock a Credor Seiko motif was painted in white. On the reverse a screw-down exhibition case back, inside a gold-plated automatic Seiko Cal. 4S77A, 28 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour, this Automatic movement is one of the most complicated that Seiko has produced, production ran from 1999 through 2005, it has hand winding and hacking for your convenience. The watch comes fitted on a Credor signed brushed stainless steel bracelet double folding clasp to operate press buttons to release and push to secure and comes with its Credor presentation box and booklet
Personal Note
This era of Credor is super interesting as the design and build quality are clearly leagues above Seiko but they trade at surprisingly fair prices, especially when you consider where Credor is today in the market. If you are after something that optimises Japanese craftsmanship and attention to detail, I'd highly recommend considering a Credor and this one happens to be a great one!
The Brand
Seiko with the success of the GrandSeiko quartz line in 1974 decided to create another luxury line called “Crêt D’or.” The term in English translates to Gold Crest, which was used to describe the top of the mountain. Later they renamed it to Credor. In 1980 they produced the world's thinnest movement at that time at just under 1mm thick. Since then Credor has been free to pursue exotic watchmaking, the like of which we associate companies like Vacheron Constantin to A. Lange & Sohne.
