The Watch
Here we have a Baltic X A Collected Man MR01 Blue Roulette Limited to 300, Baltic’s Founder, Etienne Malec, and Creative Director, Jas Rewkiewicz set out with A Collected Man, a London-based retailer of watches, luxury goods and jewellery to design a contemporary watch that encompasses both the style and culture of London and Paris, taking Inspiration from the multi-layered sector dials of old such as the Patek Philippe Calatrava reference 96 with its exquisite design flair. The 36mm brushed stainless steel case elegantly curves over your wrist with tapered drilled lugs, a lug-to-lug length of 43.5mm and a case thickness of 9.9mm ensuring a comfortable fit on your wrist. The brushed smooth bezel has a polished outer edge that lifts the overall brushed aesthetic, a domed plexiglass crystal sits above the striking “roulette” style grain textured blue dial. An outer minute track is precisely executed with small numerals, a smooth brushed ring of larger numeral indices marks the hours, and we have a sub-second dial between the 7 and 8 with concentric circular detailing. Elegant Dauphine hands complete this sophisticated vintage-inspired dial and at 12 o’clock we have the Baltic motif. On the reverse, a screwed-down exhibition case back is secured with 6 screws, inside an automatic Hangzhou ELA05MN, 30 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour. Hangzhou is a direct competitor to SEAGULL whose movement can be found in the Baltic BI-Compax chronographs, the micro-rotor sits inside the movement making it much thinner, decorated with circular Côtes de Genève, perlage just under the rotor, and blue-coloured screws, this attractive watch is appealing on both sides with Baltic’s attention to detail is inspiring. The watch comes fitted on a 20mm Baltic Italian leather strap, lug holes make for easy strap changing, and comes with its Baltic presentation box and papers.
Personal Note
This is easily my favourite Baltic MR01, the blue and brushed bezel, the hands and numerals used... Everything about it has truly captured what both Baltic and ACM wanted to achieve! If you are considering an MR01, I'd highly recommend viewing this one with us as I suspect it'll be the one you take.
The Brand
Ettiene Malec, a Frenchman, founded Baltic in 2017. The name comes from his father’s birthplace in northern Poland near the Baltic Sea. His inspiration came after finding a suitcase full of his late father's watches with a notebook full of details about the watches. He soon after started to meet other collectors and started to collect himself. Then, seeing the huge interest in vintage timepieces, he completed a Kickstarter campaign with the Baltic HMS 001 and a Bi-Compax 001. Each watch is hand-assembled in France near Besançon. Today the brand continues to grow through its social media presence and its website, to offer contemporary designed, vintage-inspired timepieces.
