The Watch

Here, we have a curvaceous 2024 Certina DS SUPER PH1000M Automatic Orange Limited of 0483/1000 pieces, which has a 43.5mm polished and brushed 316L stainless steel tonneau-shaped case. This is a modern Re-Creation of their original 1970s DS Super PH1000M designed to reach the inky black depths at 1000m. Its polished chamfered lines transition towards thick, flat-ended lugs. On the right side is a screw-down signed crown, and on the left side, you find an automatic Helium Escape Valve. The polished ring holds a unidirectional bezel with a clever safety locking system released by pressing the bezel down to rotate, a matte black aluminium dive insert with clearly marked 60-minute silver numerals. A round flat sapphire crystal AR coated sits above a vibrant orange dial; an outer minute track has darker orange accents with Super-LumiNova filled applied polished squares and baton indexes marking the hours. At 3 o’clock, a framed date window. A slender orange-outlined sword hand for the minutes alongside a white broad sword hand for the hours both have Super-LumiNova infill. Giving the watch a distinctive 1960s and 1970s look and feel. At noon, we have the Certina motif “Automatic” printed underneath, and at 6 o’clock “, DS SUPER PH1000M Limited Edition.” On the reverse, a screw-down case back together with the screw-down crown gives the watch its DS (Double Security) ISO-6425 Certification. In the centre, the historic Certina turtle emblem and the details of the watch are engraved around its edge. Inside an automatic Powermatic Cal. 80.611, 25 jewels, 21,600 beats per hour, based on the ETA 2824-2 architecture with hand winding and hacking seconds and comes paired with two Certina black rubber straps secured by a Certina signed pin buckle and comes with its Certina tough case, swing tag and paperwork.

Personal Note

Certina has been doing a wonderful job of appealing to serious watch collectors in the past few years with limited editions that offer a re-creation of long-gone references in their collection. This is the Certina DS SUPER PH1000M with a striking orange dial, limited to 1,000 watches total, a wonderful example and this one appears to have never been worn. I would not hesitate to add this to your collection today and save yourself a nice amount on RRP!

The Brand

Certina was founded in 1888 by Adolf and Alfred Kurth in Grenchen, Switzerland. Where they made movements and supplies for the watch industry; shortly afterwards, they started making their own watches and grew their workforce from 3 to 250 in 1938 when they celebrated their 50th Anniversary. By 1955 they had 500 employees and were producing 1000 watches a day. This expansion continued in 1971 when they were producing 600,000 watches every year with a workforce of 900. In 1983, Certina became a member of the Swatch group which they continue to this day.
