The Watch

Here we have a 2022 Doxa SUB 300 Sharkhunter Carbon Aqua Lung Yellow Limited to 300 pieces, this is the first forged carbon-cased Doxa and made in collaboration with Aqua-Lung formally known as U.S. Divers Company which is a division of the French diving brand Air Liquide founded in part by Jaques Cousteau. Cousteau and Emile Gagnan invented the Aqua-Lung in 1943 and famously brought the beauty of the depths to mass audiences at the Cinema in 1956 with their film The Silent World (La Monde Du Silence) which won a Hollywood Oscar. Air Liquide acquired U.S. Divers in 1956, which saw the beginning of the company's expansion into new markets with new offices in multiple countries including Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom and Australia. The 42.5mm C-shaped Forged Carbon case sits on the wrist like a cushion, the ultra-lightweight case is fitted with a Titanium chamber to protect the movement and is pressure resistant, and a lug-to-lug length of 45.5mm and a case thickness of 13mm gives the watch an impressive wrist presence. At 3 o’clock a screw-down crown that fits recessed into the side of the case for protection. The unidirectional bezel has the U.S. Navy No Decompression scales, with an outer depth scale in yellow and the minute scale in white, to allow divers to gauge how much air was left in their tanks. The boxed sapphire crystal sits above the carbon dial, large double baton indexes with Super-LumiNova down their centres mark the hours, and at 3 o’clock a framed date window. A small hour hand with a larger yellow minute hand is complemented by a white sweeping second hand with a Super-LumiNova square counterweight, this colour combination is highly visible when diving. A crosshair on the dial has text on the upper left side with “DOXA” and “automatic” printed, on the lower left side, we have the “AquaLung” logo printed and finally on the lower right side, “SUB 300” “Sharkhunter Carbon''. On the reverse, a screw-down Forged Carbon case back with the DOXA motif in bas-relief in the centre, inside automatic ETA 2824-2, 25 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour. The watch comes paired with its original large uncut, capable of fitting over a wetsuit and more, 19mm Doxa signed Rubber strap with a signed black PVD coated folding clasp, embossed with the Doxa fish and push-button release, and the watch also comes with its Doxa presentation box, travel case and papers.

Personal Note

The options for a full carbon watch at a reasonable price are low and Doxa fill that void perfectly with this reference, the SUB 300 Sharkhunter Aqua Lung with striking yellow highlights that contrast perfectly against the swirls and details of the carbon! Plus, the great savings you are getting on RRP makes it all the better.

The Brand

Doxa was established in 1889 in Le Locle, Switzerland, by Georges Ducommun. In 1921 Doxa became the supplier of dash clocks to Bugatti. In 1925 Georges became the vice president of the Swiss Horology Society. 1936 saw Georges's passing, and the company was now in the hands of son-in-law Jaques Nardin, the grandson of Ulysse Nardin. In 1944 the company was renamed “Manufacture des Montre DOXA''. The company was finally sold in 1997 to the Jenny family, transferring their headquarters to Bienne, Switzerland.
