The Watch
Here we have a 2005 Chronoswiss Tora GMT Chronograph CH 7423 with a polished and brushed 38mm stainless steel case that curves over your wrist with slender rounded screwed lugs, and a lug-to-lug length of 48mm and a case thickness of 15mm giving the watch an impressive wrist presence. Coin edging is repeated around the lower part of the case and between the lugs you find CH 7423 deeply engraved. Down the right side, we have the decorated chronograph pushers and in the centre a domed turnip-style crown with deep knurling for extra grip. On the left, at 10 o’clock we have a blue pusher for the second time zone. A coin-edged bezel holds a domed sapphire crystal AR coated above a dynamic Guilloché 925 Sterling silver dial, an outer minute track with ¼ second divisions is precisely executed surrounding attractive Breguet numerals marking the hours, at 12 o’clock a 30-minute register, at 3 o’clock an analogue date register, at 6 o’clock a 12-hour register and finally at 9 o’clock a continuous seconds and a 24-hour register with blue for night time and silver for day time, each register is decorated with Guilloché in the centre and blued hands. Elegant-blued Breguet-style hands are complemented by a finely tapered chronograph hand. At 12 o’clock we have the Chronoswiss motif and at 6 o’clock “Chronograph” completes this stunning travel companion. On the reverse a screw-down exhibition sapphire case back showcasing the automatic Chronoswiss Cal. C.743, 25 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour, the gold rotor is signed with the Chronoswiss motif. The watch comes paired with a 20mm leather strap with a signed buckle, and the watch comes with its Chronoswiss presentation box, swing tag and unsigned paperwork.
Personal Note
It's not every day a Chronoswiss comes across your desk, especially a Tora GMT Calendar Chronograph like this reference CH 7423! Beautifully proportioned and expertly executed with so many complications without becoming overwhelming. The dial and case feel inspired by early Breguet and this is a serious compliment! I wouldn't hesitate to add this to your collection, for the money it is astounding how good this is.
The Brand
Gerd-Rüdiger Lang founded Chronoswiss in 1983 in Munich. They have created some very interesting timepieces such as Sirius a Lunar Chronograph, the world’s first mechanical chronograph with moon phase, and an exhibition case back. The Régulateur – the world’s first series of manufactured wristwatches with a regulator-style display separating minutes, seconds, and hours. From 2012 the Swiss entrepreneurial family Ebstein acquired the assets of Chronoswiss from founder Gerd-Rüdiger Lang.
