The Watch

Avia watch company was founded in 1887 by H. V. Degoumois in La Chaux de Fonds, Switzerland. During the 1950s and 60s, Avia was well known for its variety of mechanical watches. Including sports chronographs. In 1968, Avia became part of a consortium of 6 watch manufacturers including Invicta and Sandoz, and it was this consortium that developed the very first quartz digital watch having an LCD display. This new watch appeared for the first time on 6 March 1972 at the Basel watch fair. In 2001 the Fossil Group purchased Avia and is still producing watches today.

This 1990s Avia 200M Quartz Tritium Diver has a 39mm brushed stainless steel case. The squared-off case covers the spring bars. A lug to lug length of 40mm and a thickness of 10mm gives the watch an impressive wrist presence. On the right side at 4 o’clock a crown. The stainless steel bezel has an aluminum 60-minute dive insert with an inverted triangle at 12 o’clock. A flat crystal sits above a matte black dial. An outer 24-hour scale with the applied disc’s coated in tritium marking the hours. At 3 o’clock a framed day/date window. Plongeur watch hands are complemented by a lollipop second hand all coated in Tritium. On the reverse, a screw-down case back. Inside a Swiss Quartz movement. The watch comes fitted with a 21mm NATO strap.

Personal Note

Tritium watches are starting to climb in attention within the collecting community as people are realising that they are some of the final watches made that will develop age and patina, modern watches with all their advancements are incredible, but you won't get that same vintage charm in many years that you will with a watch like this.
