The Watch
Here we have a 1980s Citizen Eagle 7 Yellow Gold Plated Automatic with its 36mm "Oyster-style" case tapered lugs for a comfortable fit on your wrist, a Gold-plated fluted bezel reminiscent of a Datejust, and holding a flat mineral crystal above a striking white dial. The dial has an outer minute track with lume pips, and thin gold-toned applied baton indexes mark the hours. At 3 o’clock, a gold-toned framed day/date window and slim gold-toned hands are lume-filled and complemented by a tapered sweeping second hand. Applied “Citizen” at 12 o’clock and the “Eagle 7” at 6 o’clock to complete this vintage dress watch. On the reverse, a screw-down case back, inside an automatic Miyota Cal. 8200A, 21 jewels, 21,600 beats per hour, the movement is a real workhorse and has a quick set date and can be hand-wound. The watch comes fitted on a 20mm Yellow Gold-plated Citizen bracelet with a signed folding clasp.
Personal Note
This Citizen Eagle 7 is where it all began for me, my first mechanical and vintage watch and I still own mine to this day. Affordable and clearly a homage to the Datejust/Day-Dates by Rolex, but at a fraction of the cost and offers a ton of fun for the money. I would not hesitate to add this little gem to your collection today, it's a big look for the money!
The Brand
Citizen founded the Shokosha Watch Research Institute in 1918. The name originates from a pocket watch it produced in 1924. The Mayor of Tokyo, Mr Shimpei Goto, named the watch "CITIZEN" in the hopes that it would become a worldwide success. In 1930, the name Citizen Watch Company was introduced. In 1959, Citizen launched Japan’s first fully waterproof watch, the Parawater. During the “quartz crisis,” they developed the Eco-Drive movement in 1976. This was one of the first solar-powered watches on the market. Continuing to innovate and expand its reach In 1993, Citizen introduced the world’s first multi-band atomic watch. It uses Atomic clocks around the world to synchronise to within two nanoseconds per day. Citizen makes the cases, the dial, the hands, and the movement in their Iida factory in Japan. Today, Citizen Group owns brands such as Alpina and Arnold & Son.
