Points of Mention

The Watch

Guilde POP watch company was part of a French consortium of brands during the 1960s and 70s including POP based in Haut-Doubs in Eastern France near the Swiss border part of the Jura mountains. The Guilde POP brand had a connection with Nivada Grenchen of Switzerland. A Nivada Grenchen Chronomaster, their bi-compax chronograph of the 1960s had both brands on the dial.

Here we have a 1975 Guilde "Pop" Chronograph with a 37mm tonneau stainless steel case. Polished chamfered edges and a radiating brushed effect on the top surface makes this watch stand out from the crowd. A lug to lug length of 42.5mm and a thickness of 13.5mm gives the watch an impressive wrist presence. Down the right side, we have the chronograph pushers with a large crown in the center. The domed oval acrylic crystal sits above a grey concrete textured dial. The unusual dial shape has a thick outer minute track with long red lines marking the hours. At 3 o’clock a tonneau-shaped 30-minute register and at 9 o’clock a tonneau-shaped small seconds register, finally at 6 o’clock a framed date window. Long baton hands with a tapered chronograph second hand complete this well-balanced bi-compax chronograph. Text is printed at 12 and 6 respectively. On the reverse, a screw-down case back. Inside a  Manually Wound Valjoux 7734, 17 jewels, 18,000 beats per hour. The Valjoux 77xx family was in production from 1969 until 1978. The watch comes fitted on a 21mm suede strap.

Personal Note

One from the personal collection and I will be sad to see it go, but as a watch dealer I cannot keep them all! The shape is so unique on and off the wrist, plus the condition is the real star! Find me a cooler chronograph for this price that's vintage, I'll wait!
