The Watch

Here, we have a 1970s Ulysse Nardin 36000 Chronometer with a curvaceous brushed 35mm stainless steel Cushion Case. Thanks to its 40.5 mm lug-to-lug length and 10 mm case thickness, it sits comfortably on your wrist, and on the right side, a signed coin-edge crown is sitting slightly recessed. The top of the case has vertical brushing, creating an attractive effect: being bezel-less forms a seamless transition from the case to the flat crystal that sits above a vertically brushed silver dial. An outer minute track has applied polished and brushed facet-edged baton indexes marking the hours. At 3 o’clock, a date window. Slender steel baton hands are complemented by a tapered sweeping second hand. We have the Ulysse Nardin Anchor motif at noon, “Automatic” printed underneath and “36,000 Officially Certified Chronometer” at 6 o’clock. On the reverse, a screw-down case back, inside an automatic Ulysse Nardin Cal. NB 11 QU, 25 jewels, beating at 36,000, based on the ETA Cal. 2826, this quality movement has a screwless Glucydur balance, a flat hairspring and an eccentric screw for fine regulator adjustment. It comes paired with an 18mm vintage-style suede strap and pin buckle.

Personal Note

This vintage Ulysse Nardin offers incredible value in the world of vintage, featuring a high beat 36,000 UN calibre NB 11 QU, a beautiful textured dial and a comfortable 35mm cushion case. Whilst Ulysse Nardin isn't typically everyone's first go-to for vintage, they produced some absolute gems and this example from the 1970s is the perfect demonstration of that. Snap it up whilst you can!

The Brand

Ulysse Nardin was founded in 1846 in Le Locle, Switzerland, by Ulysse Nardin. They moved to their rue Jardin premises in 1865, where they still manufacture watches today. They designed the world's first-ever marine chronometer and won many awards in deck watches, chronometers, and wristwatches. In 1983, Rolf W. Schnyder took over the company. After his death, the company joined the Kering Group in 2014.
