The Watch

BWC is an old watch company founded in 1924 and still makes watches today, BWC stands for Buttes Watch Company as the founder (Arthur Charlet) was born in Buttes, Switzerland. The company is most known for its chronographs from the 70s featuring Lemania and Landeron movements and often bright colours, which was very fitting for the time.

Since 2003 BWC is owned by the German Pforzheim company Starck-Uhren, and since 2004 watches are manufactured in Biel Switzerland and Pforzheim Germany. Since 2006 the company Carl Engelkemper from Münster bought the sole distribution rights for Germany. BWC celebrated their 85 years anniversary in 2009.

Here we have a 1970s BWC Courage "Newman Dial" Manual Wound with a 34.5mm stainless steel case. Long tapered lugs with a lug to lug length of 41.5mm and a thickness of 11mm ensures a comfortable fit on the wrist. A thin bezel holds a domed crystal above a black dial. An outer minute track with Arabic numerals marks the hours. At 6 o’clock a small seconds register. Slender sword hands with luminescence tips complete the dial. Text is printed at 12 o’clock and above the small seconds. This style of dial is commonly seen on military watches, its simplicity and legibility are characteristic of those watches. On the reverse, a screw-down case back. Inside a Manually Wound ETA 7001, 17 jewels, 21,600 beats per hour. This movement has been in production since 1971 and was used in NOMOS watches from 1992 until 2005. The watch comes fitted on an 18mm leather strap.

Personal Note

I've always been a big fan of this BWC Courage watches, multiple different dial configurations and this has to be one of my favourites yet! The "Newman" subdial is stunning and really goes with the whole design, if you're looking for an affordable yet fantastic vintage watch, you've foundit!
