The Watch
Certina was founded in 1888 by Adolf and Alfred Kurth in Grenchen Switzerland, where they made movements and supplies for the watch industry. Shortly afterwards they started making their own watches and grew their workforce from 3 to 250 in 1938 when they celebrated their 50th Anniversary. By 1955 they had 500 employees and were producing 1000 watches a day. This expansion continued in 1971 where they were producing 600,000 watches every year with a workforce of 900. In 1983 Certina became a member of the Swatch group which they continue to this day.
The Certina New Art has a 33mm case with a slim profile, polished and brushed surfaces ending with tapering lugs. At 37mm lug to lug length, you can be sure of a comfortable fit on the wrist. A slim bezel holds the domed crystal. The silver dial has slim baton indexes marking the hours. At 3 o’clock a framed date window. Fine pencil hands have lume infill alongside a sweeping needle centre seconds hand. On the reverse a screw-down case back with an embossed jet and New Art text. Inside an Automatic Certina Cal.25-651, 28 Jewels, 19,800 beats per hour, Incabloc movement. Manufactured between 1960 and 1968. Fitted on an 18mm burgundy strap.
Personal Note
With the rise in popularity of most entry-level vintage Omega watches the prices have followed too, this has made some of their most basic models unobtainable for most collectors of affordable vintage watches. This is where brands like Certina come up strong as they offer just as good, if not better in some aspects, watches than Omega and for a fraction of the price due to collectability not being quite as high! This makes them great purchases for the new collector or the seasoned collector.
