The Watch

Certina was founded in 1888 by Adolf and Alfred Kurth in Grenchen Switzerland. Where they made movements and supplies for the watch industry. Shortly afterwards they started making their watches and grew their workforce from 3 to 250 in 1938 when they celebrated their 50th Anniversary. By 1955 they had 500 employees and were producing 1000 watches a day. This expansion continued in 1971 when they were producing 600,000 watches every year with a workforce of 900. In 1983 Certina became a member of the Swatch group which they continue to this day.

Here we have a 1960s Certina DS-2 with a 37.5mm tonneau stainless steel case. A curve of the case leads to a lug-to-lug length of 42.5mm and a case thickness of 13.5mm ensuring a comfortable fit on your wrist. The case shape sits on your wrist like a cushion. On the right side is a signed crown. Polished and brushed surfaces transition with distinct lines. A domed crystal sits above a striking blue fumé dial which has an almost black edge and a deep blue centre. The dial's surface has a  “Spiders Web” effect due to the way the lacquer has aged and cracked. Applied baton indexes have luminance infill marking the hours. At 3 o’clock a framed date window. Slender baton hands have lume tips and are complemented by a tapered sweeping second hand. At 12 o’clock the Certina motif and “DS-2” at 6 o’clock complete this striking dial. On the reverse, a screw-down case back with the Turtle embossed in the centre. Inside an Automatic Certina Cal. 25-651, 19,800 beats per hour. The watch comes fitted on its original 18mm Certina stainless steel bracelet with a signed folding clasp.

Personal Note

For under £500 it's hard to deny the value of the vintage DS range by Certina, to get a truly original and fantastic looking watch from an important era in watches by a brand with great history and heritage, its becoming more and more difficult each year. Especially as the good examples are finding their way into long-term collections and may not hit the market again, if ever. Jump on this lovely example whilst you can.
