The Watch
Bremont was founded in 2002 by the brother's Nick and Giles English, their watch designs are inspired by their love of flying and everything mechanical. During the 1990s while flying their 1930s biplane over France they got into trouble and had to land in a field, not wishing to contact the authorities involved, they were met by the farm owner who gave them and the plane shelter, it turned out he had flown during the war and was an engineer. The brothers, grateful to the kind farmer, promised they would never forget him, his name was Antoine Bremont. In 1995 they were involved in an accident and sadly lost their father Dr Euan English while flying their World War II vintage Harvard aircraft, his loss and their injuries drove the brothers to create a fitting legacy. Moving into their Manufacturing & Technology Centre in 2021, innovation and producing technologically advanced timepieces have been an ever-expanding experience for Bremont. Their military connections through special edition watches and tireless work with Help for Heroes and The Royal British Legion means their late fathers' legacy will continue to grow.
Here we have an Unworn Bremont S500 x Bamford Special Edition limited to 250 pieces which ours is number 177, this design is a collaboration between Bremont and Bamford Watch Department, inspired by their strong friendship and respect for each other's business. The 43mm brushed black DLC treated hardened stainless steel case uses the Bremont Trip-Tick construction system made up of 3 parts, a hardened steel bezel, and a middle section that provides the case with unique shock-absorbing and finally a steel black DLC coated case back. An automatic Helium valve is fitted, alongside an inner soft anti-magnetic Faraday cage. At two o’clock a signed screw-down crown is protected by a crown guard, and the black unidirectional dive bezel has a ceramic insert with raised polished numerals. A domed sapphire crystal has an AR coating sitting above a matte black sandwich dial, an outer minute chapter ring is precisely printed surrounding a dynamic California dial with the distinctive Bamford blue shining through. The matte black hands are complemented by an arrow sweeping second hand all coated with Super-LumiNova which shines blue when charged. At 12 o’clock we have the co-signed Bremont and Bamford and at 6 o’clock “Supermarine 500 m - 1640 ft” completes this stealthy dive watch. On the reverse, a screw-down black DLC coated case back with an etching of the Supermarine Spitfire seaplane pays tribute to its aviation founders. Inside an Automatic Calibre 11 1/2’’ BE-36AE, 26 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour. COSC is certified to ISO 3159 standards, made up of Anachron balance spring, Nivaflex 1 mainspring. The watch comes fitted on its Bremont Black sailcloth 22mm strap with light blue side stitching and a Jet-treated pin buckle and comes with its Bremont presentation box and paperwork.
Personal Note
This Limited Edition doesn't quite do it for me personally, but I can totally see why it has been a great success and there are many people out there who absolutely love it! Bamford is unforgiving in his personal design tastes and it is great to see brands give him a lot of control when doing a collaboration like this, that is the charm of Bamford and also the power of the Bamford brand. If you are on the fence I'd recommend booking an appointment and coming in to see it for yourself.
