The Watch
Seikos history began in 1881 when Kintaro Hattori established the K. Hattori retail and repair store. In 1892 Seikosha was established making wall clocks. 1895 saw the production of their first pocket watch. 1913 saw the launch of their first wristwatch, the Laurel. In 1924 the first Seiko was manufactured. Daini Seikosha (now Seiko Instruments Inc.) established in 1937. Seiko listed on the Tokyo stock exchange in 1949. The Suwa factory became independent and formed Suwa Seikosha Co. Ltd. (now Seiko Epson Corporation in 1959).
The Seiko Prospex Black Series is inspired by the world of night diving. 45mm stainless steel with black hard coating case, screw-down crown, and case back. Hardlex crystal protects the matt black dial, lumibrite hour markers surround, syringe hour hand, and broad arrow orange minute hand. Just as the night diver will use an orange light for excellent visibility. Day date window at 3 o’clock position. Inside we have the workhorse Automatic Seiko Cal. 4R36 with hand winding and hacking functionality. 24 Jewels and 21,600 beats per hour. The watch comes fitted on a 22mm silicone strap with a signed buckle. Comes with its Seiko presentation box and papers.
Personal Note
I have purchased and sold a few of this model over the years and I am amazed by how much it has gone up in value! I suspect we won't see this model slow down either, it has been hot since day one, and as Seiko keeps releasing more editions it only makes these more desirable as it is such a well-executed example!
