The Watch
This very rare Bremont Martin-Baker MB 1.5 (Not the limited edition of 20 for the forums!) is a very special staff only version presented by Andrew Baker himself. (Provenance included) Bremont made this in collaboration with British Aviation company Martin-Baker who are interestingly responsible for supplying 70% of the world’s Air Forces with fighter ejection seat technology. Martin-Baker has saved over 7,600 lives. Martin-Baker approached Bremont in 2007 to create a watch that could withstand the very same torturous testing programme as their ejection seats. Two years later, the Bremont MBI was born. The 43 mm brushed stainless steel round case uses the Bremont Trip-Tick® construction system made up of 3 parts, a hardened steel bezel, a middle section made from Titanium or DLC treated middle barrel and finally a steel case back. A 50 mm lug to lug length gives the watch real wrist presence. On the right side at 2 o’clock a screw-down crown to adjust the inner chapter ring and at 3 o’clock a screw-down crown for adjusting the time and date, both have deep knurling making gripping them even with gloves on a satisfying experience. The brushed hardened bezel holds a flat sapphire crystal with AR coating applied to both sides, greatly reducing reflections. A black inner minute chapter ring rotates with the crown at 2 o'clock and has yellow markings. The black dial has thickly applied Super-LumiNova®️ Arabic numerals, plongeur watch hands alongside a unique yellow sweeping seconds hand with an ejector seat pull release counterbalance. At 3 o’clock a framed day/date window. On the reverse, stainless steel screwed in case back with “Martin Baker Ejection Seat” emblem in the centre. Inside suspended between a rubber sandwich we have the movement. This combination of parts to the case acts as a faraday cage making it anti-magnetic and very shock absorbent. An Automatic Modified Calibre 11 1/2" BE-36AE Automatic, 25 Jewels, 28,800 beats per hour COSC certified to ISO 3159 standard. Made up of Anachron balance spring, Nivaflex 1 mainspring with a moulded skeletonised rotor. Fitted on a 22mm NATO.
Personal Note
This will be a watch that appeals to the collector of Bremont and someone who maybe has an affiliation with Martin Baker, the provenance it comes with it what truly adds to the story here and the fact the watch bears the reference "MBSTAFF". It really is a bit of a mystery watch, what I know is what is stated in the letter, beyond that it really is down to what you think as Bremont and Martin Baker haven't been particularly open to sharing that information with us.
