Points of Mention

This watch is sold as a full set and therefore comes with its original Omega box, outer cardboard box too and Omega paperwork, the watch was purchased in September 2019 and is perfect worn condition.

The Watch

It was 1968 when 3 Astronauts Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders were the first humans to fly to the Moon, to witness and photograph an Earthrise, and to ever see the Dark Side of the Moon. An incredible achievement. Omega 50 years later in 2018 celebrated this with a very special Speedmaster, the dial is skeletonized showing off a highly decorated Cal.1861 movement, Omega calls this Cal.1869. It is based on the Lemania 1873, which is a first for Omega, on a Dark Side Of The Moon watch. 19 Jewel Handwound Chronograph, beating at 21,600 BPH and a 48-hour power reserve. The 44mm case is entirely made of zirconium oxide Ceramic, Sapphire crystal protects the dial. Both dial and movement has been expertly lasered to replicate the surface of the moon both the near side and dark side. The subdial hands are varnished yellow and the tachymeter numerals are filled with Super-LumiNova. Pencil hands and fine indexes complete the dial. The words “We’ll see you on the other side” is a reference to James Lovell's communication to ground control as it sped towards the dark side of the moon and radio silence. Caseback is of Ceramic with Sapphire crystal on the exhibition, highlighting the spectacular Cal.1869 movement with its laser decoration of the surface of the moon. A 21mm black leather strap continues the black and yellow theme with yellow rubber sandwiched between black leather, perforated design harks back to its racing pedigree.

Personal Note

This Speedmaster is easily one of my absolute favourites that aren't the classic hesalite Professional model! I think what they achieved here is truly beautiful, different but also paying enough tribute to the Speedmaster to still be titled a "Speedmaster". My favourite part of this watch is the fact that even at 44mm it does not wear too dissimilar to the 42mm Professional thanks to its similar lug-to-lug lengths!
