The Watch

In 1873, the Langendorf Watch Company was founded to produce watches under the Lanco name, located in the village of Langendorf, Switzerland. Building machines to manufacture watches in a new and innovative way. With the influx of cheap quartz watches during the 1970s from Asia, the operation was finally closed down in 1973.  As of 1998, new Lanco watches are being sold in South Africa by S. Bacher & Company, under license from The Swatch Group.

Our New Old Stock 1970s Lanco Day/Date has a 36mm brushed stainless steel tonneau case. The case gently curves towards the lugs with a lug to lug length of 41mm and a thickness of 12mm for that comfortable fit on the wrist. Polished bevelled edges transition with crisp lines. A flat rectangular crystal sits proud of the case, quintessentially 1970s in design.  The dial graduates from dark to light green in the centre with an outer minute track and applied baton indexes topped with a Tritium lume pip marking the hours. At 6 o’clock a day/date window. Broad steel hands have lume infill completing this striking dial. The text is precisely printed in white. On the reverse, a screw-down case back. Inside an automatic AS Cal. 2066, 25 jewels, 21,600 beats per hour. The movement features sweeping seconds hand, quick-set day and date. The movement was in production from 1969 until 1978. The watch comes fitted on its original 26mm integrated bracelet in brushed stainless steel with a folding clasp.

Personal Note

Another unapologetically 1970s wristwatch, I do love them! The green dial pops from the centre outwards to the unusually placed day & date display and the untouched lume plots which are stunning. This watch reminds me of an affordable Omega Constellation spider dial, if you haven't seen one of those give it a quick google and you'll see what I mean.
