The Watch

Here we have a 2022 Seiko Prospex Speedtimer 1969 Re-Creation SSC813P1, a modern recreation of their 1969 chronograph which was one of the world's very first automatic chronographs. The 39mm C-shaped stainless steel case curves over your wrist with circular brushed and polished surfaces towards flat-ended lugs, a lug-to-lug length of 45.5mm and a case thickness of 13mm give the watch an impressive wrist presence. Down the right side, we have the chronograph pushers and a large crown in the centre with deep knurling for extra grip, the black Tachymeter fixed bezel is precisely marked with white numerals, holding a domed sapphire crystal AR coated on the inside above a string white and black panda dial. An outer minute track has applied steel polished chamfer-edged baton indexes marking the hours, at 3 o’clock a 24-hour register, at 6 o’clock a 60-minute register with the Solar power reserve indicator incorporated into it and finally, at 9 o’clock the continuous seconds, all the deeply recessed registers are black with white numerals creating a nice contrast to the white of the dial. Between the 4 and 5, you find a date window, elegant sword hands are infilled with LumiBrite complemented by an arrow-tipped chronograph hand, and at 12 o’clock we have the applied Seiko motif with the Prospex logo printed underneath completing this modern interpretation of their iconic chronograph from 1969. On the reverse, a screw-down case back with the watch details etched into it, inside a quartz Seiko Cal. V192 Solar-powered movement that recharges through light absorbed through the dial. The watch comes fitted on a 20mm Seiko brushed stainless steel bracelet with a signed push button release deployment clasp, all links are included, and the watch comes with its Seiko presentation box, swing tag and unsigned paperwork.

Personal Note

Another fantastic release from Seiko and one that I saw repeatedly in the watch shop windows and loved the look of, now having one in stock I can confirm it wears incredibly well on the wrist and looks far more expensive than the price tag would have you believe! I'll also add that the watch looks amazing on a leather strap, for me it looks far better than on the bracelet, but I'll always take having both opinions over just the one!

The Brand

Seiko's history began in 1881 when Kintaro Hattori established the K. Hattori retail and repair store. In 1892 Seikosha was established by making wall clocks. 1895 saw the production of their first pocket watch. 1913 saw the launch of their first wristwatch, the Laurel. In 1924 the first Seiko was manufactured. Daini Seikosha (now Seiko Instruments Inc.) was established in 1937. Seiko was listed on the Tokyo stock exchange in 1949. The Suwa factory became independent and formed Suwa Seikosha Co., Ltd. (now Seiko Epson Corporation in 1959). In 1956 Seiko launched Marvel as their first true in-house-made watch; they continued to make this watch until 1959. Japan’s first chronograph watch was introduced for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics; it was called the Seiko Crown Chronograph monopusher. Not stopping there Seiko launched Japan's first true divers watch, the Seiko Diver’s 150M fitted with the automatic Caliber 6217 which later was given the nickname “62MAS” by collectors. The company name was changed to the Seiko Corporation in 1990. Innovation at Seiko continues today with GPS Solar watches.
