The Watch

Here we have a 2022 Seiko 5 Sports x Yuto Horigome SKX SRPJ39K1 made in collaboration with Japanese Olympic Gold Medallist Skateboarder Yuto Horigome, Limited to 6000 pieces. The 42mm stainless steel case is coated in a polished black Seiko proprietary hardened coating making it resistant to scratches, it subtly curves over your wrist with a crisp edge leading to tapered lugs, a lug-to-lug length of 45.5mm and a case thickness of 13.3mm gives the watch an impressive wrist presence. Seiko gets wrist ergonomics so right ensuring a comfortable fit. On the right side at 4 o’clock a crown protected by the case shape acts as a crown guard. The unidirectional bezel has a double row of knurling for extra grip with a black dive insert and silver-coloured numerals, holding a flat Hardlex crystal above a 3D textured black and grey camouflage dial, this street fashion design is seen worn by skateboarders around the world. An outer minute chapter ring surrounds the applied disc and rounded baton indexes coated in LumiBrite mark the hours, at 3 o’clock a day/date window, Steel sword and arrow hands infilled with LumiBrite complemented by a lollipop counterweighted tapered sweeping second-hand complete this dynamic dive watch. At 12 o’clock we have the Seiko motif and at 6 o’clock “Automatic” in a flowing script. On the reverse, a screw-down exhibition case back with Yuto Horigome's signature across it, inside an automatic Seiko Cal. 4R36, 24 jewels, beating at 21,600 beats per hour, it has hand winding and hacking for your convenience. The watch comes paired with a 22mm Seiko black silicone strap with a signed buckle and the watch comes with its Limited Edition Seiko presentation box, booklets, signed card and swing tag.

Personal Note

This has quickly become one of my favourites from the new Seiko lineup, the black texture of the dial is mesmerising and really changes with the light, constantly bringing you back to admire the finishing. I wouldn't hesitate on this one if you are considering an all-black watch, this provides that stealth look with something more.

The Brand

Seiko's history began in 1881 when Kintaro Hattori established the K. Hattori retail and repair store. In 1892 Seikosha was established to make wall clocks. 1895 saw the production of their first pocket watch. 1913 saw the launch of their first wristwatch, the Laurel. In 1924 the first Seiko was manufactured. Daini Seikosha (now Seiko Instruments Inc.) was established in 1937. Seiko was listed on the Tokyo stock exchange in 1949. The Suwa factory became independent and formed Suwa Seikosha Co., Ltd. (now Seiko Epson Corporation in 1959). In 1956 Seiko launched Marvel as their first true in-house-made watch; they continued to make this watch until 1959. Japan’s first chronograph watch was introduced for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics; it was called the Seiko Crown Chronograph monopusher. Not stopping there Seiko launched Japan's first true divers watch, the Seiko Diver’s 150M fitted with the automatic Caliber 6217 which later was given the nickname “62MAS” by collectors. The company name was changed to the Seiko Corporation in 1990. Innovation at Seiko continues today with GPS Solar watches.
