The Watch
Here we have a 2022 Nomadic Marai 401 "Dark Atlantic Emerald", the model name comes from Maraí which means SeaFarer in Irish and the 401 is a heavy-duty sea-faring tool used in the shipyard. With a 40mm 316L stainless steel case that curves over your wrist with thick tapered lugs, polished and brushed surfaces transition with crisp edges and a polished bevel edge that leads to a lug-to-lug length of 49mm and a case thickness of 11.5mm giving the watch an impressive wrist presence, taking its inspiration and design cues from the Rolex Submariner. On the right side, a screw-down signed crown with deep knurling for extra grip. The stainless steel bezel has deep knurling and a green "Dark Atlantic Emerald" ceramic dive insert holding a sapphire crystal AR coated for excellent viewing angles above a matte black dial. An outer minute rack is precisely executed with the applied disc, baton indexes and an inverted triangle at 12 o’clock coated in blue BGW9 Super-LumiNova for that vintage aesthetic marking the hours, slender steel baton and sword hands covered in aged Super-LumiNova blue BGW9 complemented by their signature yellow sweeping second hand, a nod to the yellow gantry cranes of the shipyard. At 12 o’clock we have the NOMADIC motif and at 6 o’clock Maraí 401,200m/660ft, automatic clearly printed. On the reverse a screw-down case back with “NOMADIC” engraved across it, inside an automatic Sellita SW200-1, 26 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour. The watch comes paired with its NOMADIC 20mm brushed stainless steel bracelet with a push button release signed folding deployment clasp and the watch comes with its NOMADIC presentation box, watch roll, paperwork, strap-changing tool, screwdriver and spare links.
Personal Note
I have seen what Nomadic has been doing on social media for a little while and thought their watches looked fantastic but hadn't yet had one in stock, then we ended up with 2 on our desk and I am blown away by how great they are for the money! The build quality is undeniable and the design is fantastic, wears perfectly on and off the wrist.
The Brand
Nomadic was founded by Peter McAuley and started in 2021 based in Carrickfergus, Co Antrim, Ireland, where he became an engineer after studying at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution. Initially working for Hitachi Rail and Caterpillar, he had always had a fascination with mechanical watches which he inherited from an uncle, he saw an opportunity to create a watch of his own which encompasses the engineering ethos found in the Belfast shipyards. The brand is named after the passenger ferry SS Nomadic, the last remaining White Star line ship in the world, residing in Belfast's Hamilton Dock at the famous Irish shipyard, Harland and Wolff with its iconic yellow gantry cranes. This shipyard famously built RMS Titanic, their 401st ship.
