The Watch

Seikos history began in 1881 when Kintaro Hattori established the K. Hattori retail and repair store. In 1892 Seikosha was established to make wall clocks. 1895 saw the production of their first pocket watch. 1913 saw the launch of their first wristwatch, the Laurel. In 1924 the first Seiko was manufactured. Daini Seikosha (now Seiko Instruments Inc.) was established in 1937. Seiko was listed on the Tokyo stock exchange in 1949. The Suwa factory became independent and formed Suwa Seikosha Co., Ltd. (now Seiko Epson Corporation in 1959). In 1956 Seiko launched Marvel as their first true in-house-made watch; they continued to make this watch until 1959. Japan’s first chronograph watch was introduced for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics; it was called the Seiko Crown Chronograph mono-pusher. Not stopping there Seiko launched Japan's first true divers watch the Seiko Diver’s 150M fitted with the automatic Caliber 6217 which later was given the nickname “62MAS” by collectors. The company name was changed to the Seiko Corporation in 1990. Innovation at Seiko continues today with GPS Solar watches.

Here we have a 2021 Seiko Prospex Limited Edition Tuna 1000 S2365J1 celebrating the 35th Anniversary of Seiko’s first 1000m pro-dive watch which was released in 1986. This watch is a modern recreation of that reference 6159-7010, Limited to 1200 pieces ours is number 0864. The 49mm case is made up of a mono-bloc titanium inner case protected by a shroud made of scratch-resistant black ceramic giving it its nickname of “Tuna Can” with 4 gold coloured screws. The case has a patented seal which does away with the need for a Helium escape valve. At 4 o’clock a screw-down crown with a Lock printed on it. The unidirectional bezel is easily adjusted between the openings of the protective case surround. The raised numerals have a thick application of LumiBrite. A flat sapphire crystal sits above a dual-toned black and blue textured dial reflecting the depths of the ocean. An outer minute chapter ring is precisely printed. Applied disc and triangle at 12 o’clock are coated in LumiBrite marking the hours. At 3 o’clock we have a day date. The sword and arrow hands complemented by a yellow second hand are coated in LumiBrite. At 12 o’clock an applied Seiko and at 6 o’clock Prospex motif and 1000m in yellow paint highlighted its impressive water resistance. On the reverse, a screw-down case back with the number out of 1200 engraved into it. Inside a Quartz Seiko Cal. 7C46 a high torque movement needs to move the large hands. The watch comes with a Seiko 22mm Silicone strap with Seiko signed buckle and keeper. The watch also comes with its Seiko Limited Edition presentation box and papers.

Personal Note

I'm excited to be dedicating an entire drop to Seiko, but not just any Seiko, some of the very top end of what Seiko can offer, with finishing and movements on par with Grand Seiko. The Seiko Tune should always be one of the watches they offer from a few hundred pounds up to the ultra-high-end examples with the very best technology, such as this one. I can guarantee anyone who hasn't tried on a Tuna will see the case size and flinch, but trust me it wears incredibly well and is one to come to try on yourself and see.
