The Watch
Seikos history began in 1881 when Kintaro Hattori established the K. Hattori retail and repair store. In 1892 Seikosha was established making wall clocks. 1895 saw the production of their first pocket watch. 1913 saw the launch of their first wristwatch, the Laurel. In 1924 the first Seiko was manufactured. Daini Seikosha (now Seiko Instruments Inc.) was established in 1937. Seiko was listed on the Tokyo stock exchange in 1949. The Suwa factory became independent and formed Suwa Seikosha Co., Ltd. (now Seiko Epson Corporation in 1959).
This 2021 Seiko Prospex Divers 1968 Re-Interpretation SPB187J1 is inspired by the Seiko 1968 300m diver that was used by Japan’s first climb of Mount Everest. The 42mm stainless steel case has angular edges with brushing and polishing transitioning along crisp lines. Coated in DiaShield, a Seiko proprietary material, gives the watch resilience to scratches and scuffs. The drilled lugs have a lug to lug length of 48.5mm and a thickness of 12.5mm for an impressive wrist presence. On the right side is a screw-down crown. The unidirectional bezel has deep notches for extra grip, the black 60-minute insert has silver numerals. A slightly domed sapphire crystal AR coated sits above a sunburst blue dial. Applied disc and obelisk indexes filled with LumiBrite mark the hours. At 3 o’clock a framed date window. Broad sword hands with LumiBrite infill are complemented by a sweeping second hand. Text is precisely printed. On the reverse, a screw-down case back with the Seiko Tsunami in the center. Inside an Automatic Seiko 6R35, 24 jewels, 21,600 beats per hour. The watch comes fitted on its original 22mm stainless steel bracelet with brushed and polished surfaces complete with a Seiko three-fold clasp and dive extension and comes with its Seiko presentation box and papers.
Personal Note
I can't explain it, but when I saw this watch in the box I thought it would be massive, but on the wrist, it is absolutely perfect and far from too big! I don't know how Seiko does it, but they know how to make a watch fit any wrist regardless of size! The gradient dial is also a work of art on this watch, catch it in certain lights and its dark black, others this ocean of dark blue...
