The Watch
Oris was founded by Paul Cattin and George Christian in the Swiss town of Hölstein. They bought a factory and signed a contract with the mayor in 1904. Initially making pocket watches in 1925 they started to add bracelets to their pocket watches which soon transitioned into the wristwatch. By 1929, they had a total of six factories. At the end of the 1960s, Oris became one of the largest watch companies in the world, producing approximately 1.2 million timepieces a year. In 1982 Dr Rolf Portmann and Ulrich W. Herzog led a management buyout from Swatch Group. Unhappy with the way the Group was running things. Oris SA was born as an independent Swiss watch brand. 2002 saw their distinctive Red Rotor become an Oris registered Trademark.
Here we have a 2021 Oris Aquis Date 41.5mm "Upcycle" with a 41.5mm polished and brushed stainless steel case. The case curves over your wrist with thick drilled lugs. A lug to lug length of 48mm and a case thickness of 12.5mm give the watch an impressive wrist presence. On the right side, a screw-down signed crown protected by crown guards. A large stainless steel bezel with deep knurling for extra grip and a grey ceramic diver insert. A flat sapphire crystal sits above a very unique dial made from salvaged plastic from our oceans. The charity #TIDE collects different types of plastic, including Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET), Polypropylene (PP), and Polyethylene (PE), and upcycles them into raw materials to be used by manufacturers such as this unique dial. Oris used a PET plastic disc for the dial which gives it the pattern and colours. Large applied indexes mark the hours coated in SuperLumiNova. At 6 o’clock a date window. Long sword hands coated in SuperLumiNova complemented by a lollipop balanced sweeping second hand. Text is precisely applied to the dial. On the reverse a screw-down exhibition case back with sapphire crystal. Inside an Automatic Oris Cal. 733, 26 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour based on the Sellita SW200-1. The watch comes fitted on its Oris integrated stainless steel bracelet with a signed folding clasp and diver extension. The watch comes with its Oris presentation box and papers.
Personal Note
This dial is a true conversation starter if there ever was one, I can guarantee this will delight and intrigue both watch lovers and those who have no interest in watches! Plus the fact it was done with the goodness of charity behind it only strengthens the story, Oris has and always will be at the forefront of leading change amount the world and for that, I will always be advocating the brand and standing by them.
