The Watch
Here we have a 2021 Breitling Avenger Automatic GMT A32397 with a 43mm polished and brushed stainless steel case, the curved sides lead to a lug-to-lug length of 52.5mm and a case thickness of 12mm giving the watch an impressive wrist presence. On the right side, we have a signed screw-down crown with deep knurling protected by crown guards. A unidirectional 60-minute bezel has screw’s around its edge to give you some surface to grip, deep engraving and raised 15, 30 and 45-minute sections make this undoubtedly a Breitling. Its flat scratch-resistant sapphire crystal AR coated is recessed adding some protection against knocks, the white dial has an outer 24-hour chapter ring with applied double baton indexes infilled with luminance marking the hours, and at 3 o’clock a framed date window. The hands consist of steel sword hands infilled with luminance, a tapered second hand with a red tip and finally, a bright red GMT hand with a luminance-filled tip. At 12 o’clock we find the Breitling motif and at 6 o’clock “Chronometer Avenger” complete this rugged adventure travel watch. On the reverse a screw-down case back with “Breitling Avenger” engraved in the centre, inside an Automatic Breitling Cal. 32, 21 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour. This movement has a base of the ETA 2893-2 COSC Certified with hand winding and hacking for your convenience. Personal Note
Breitling really is doing some fantastic releases recently, this is easily one of them. Whilst at 43mm it has a presence on the wrist, it wears surprisingly well and is incredibly comfortable thanks to the shape of the case. If you are in the market for a large GMT, this is one you should be at least considering.
The Brand
Breitling was established in 1884 by Leon Breitling in the Swiss Jura Mountains, in 1915 Gaston Breitling introduced a pusher at 2 o’clock to start, stop and reset the chronograph, Leon later moved the reset to a pusher at 4 o’clock. In 1939 Breitling shipped a huge quantity of chronographs to the Royal Air Force, during the war with Germany surrounding Switzerland Leon and some friends created a makeshift runway near their factory. Planes would use the car's headlights as a guide to land, once on the ground, they were quickly loaded, taking off before the Germans knew what was going on. They introduced the “Navitimer” a navigation computer in 1952 used to calculate a flight plan. In 1969 they collaborated with Heuer, Burne, and Dubois-Depraz on a top-secret project called Project 99, together they developed one of the first self-winding chronograph movements. Breitling stands for high precision, outstanding performance, and functionality. During the early days of space exploration, Lt. Commander Scott Carpenter went around the earth three times whilst wearing a modified Navitimer. In 2017 they were sold to CVC Capital Partners, Europe's largest private equity firm.
