The Watch

Kurono Tokyo was founded by Hajime Asaoka in 2019. He is a Japanese watchmaker, one of only two members of AHCI (Académie horlogère des créateurs indépendants). Academy of independent watch artists, since 2015. Renowned for very low production handcrafted watches that sell for upwards of £120,000. He decided to offer a more affordable timepiece that has the same DNA as his more bespoke watches. Production is controlled through Precision Watch Tokyo Co. Ltd, the very same company that Hajime Asaoka uses for his handmade creations.

Here we have a 2020 Kurono Tokyo Green Mori which has been created to celebrate its first Anniversary on the 1st of June 2020. Limited to 288 pieces, the 36.5mm high polished stainless steel case is gently tapered towards the lugs with a case thickness of 10.5mm and lug-to-lug length of 43.5mm ensuring a comfortable fit on your wrist. The watch takes its design cues from the Art Deco timepieces of the past. On the right side is a domed crown and a smooth polished bezel holds a domed sapphire crystal above the stunning forest green dial. Under different lighting conditions, the dial shimmers in the light as you rotate your wrist. An outer minute track is precisely printed with three engraved concentric steel rings with four applied baton indexes to catch the light in a mesmerising way. Sculpted brushed hands complemented by a tapered teardrop balanced sweeping second hand finishing this elegantly understated vision of Japanese creativity and sensibility. The brand motif is found at 12 o’clock with Automatic at 6 o’clock. On the reverse, a screw-down case back with the brand motif and inside an automatic Miyota 90S5, 24 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour. This movement is part of the high-grade Miyota family with hand winding and hacking for your convenience. The watch comes fitted on a Kurono Tokyo 20mm leather strap with a signed buckle and also comes with its Kurono Tokyo presentation box and papers. Included in the box is a Sanshoku leather strap.

Personal Note

It's great to finally have a Kurono Tokyo in that has been worn and enjoyed as they are fantastic watches and really deserve wrist time. This is the first Mori we have had in and I'm blown away by the dial, the finishing and how it plays with the light is truly mesmerising! I'd highly recommend booking a viewing to come and see this one in the metal, it'll likely blow you away too.
