The Watch
Lange and Sohne were founded by Adolf Lange in 1845. Based in Glashutte Germany the heart of German watchmaking. 1848 Lange became Mayor of Glashutte where he spent 20 years making Glashutte a thriving Industrial centre for watchmaking. 1875, Lange’s heart failed, and he passed away at the age of 60. Leaving the business to his sons Richard and Emil. In the final months of World War 2, a Russian bombing raid destroyed their workshops. By 1948 the Soviet administration nationalized the company’s remaining property and for 45 years the name of A. Lange and Sohne was no more.
It wasn’t until 1989 with the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Iron Curtain that Walter Lange, Adolf Lange’s great-grandson, was finally able to return to Germany and continue his family’s tradition in the field of watchmaking. 1990 saw him re-register the name and 4 years later produced their first timepiece in nearly half a century. In 2001, after 10 years of restoration work, the A. Lange and Sohne workshop reopened in the remains of the destroyed building. In the years since the brand has gone on to create over 40 new movements, and achieve over 150 international horological prizes.
This stunning Saxonia style A.Lange and Sohne first introduced in 2016 has a 37mm 18ct White gold case. Its brushed sides and polished short lugs elegantly curve over your wrist. A 43mm lug to lug and an incredibly 6mm thickness ensures the wearer a perfect fit for any occasion. The polished bezel holds a flat sapphire crystal. Its solid silver dial has a soft grained finish, fine applied baton indexes are in solid white gold and their profile magically catches the light as you rotate your wrist. Slim arrow hands are made from Rhodium plated gold and are perfectly proportioned with the minute hand precisely passing just under the indexes. The print on the dial is minimalist and crisp. The dial is perfectly balanced in its understated splendour. On the reverse a sapphire crystal exhibition case back, showcasing a beautifully finished Manually Wound ALS Cal. L093.1, 21 Jewels, 21,600 beats per hour. Made from German silver it has all the refinement that can be found on their most expensive pieces, such as thermally blued screws, deep striping over the three-quarter plate and hand-carved balance cock. The movement is made up of only 167 components, an astonishing accomplishment. Fitted on 19mm Lange's black alligator strap with a white gold signed buckle.
Personal Note
We were fortunate enough to have had the ALS Saxonia 35mm in White Gold and now to have the 37mm Saxonia in is a real treat, it is amazing how well the 35mm wore and I truly believe the 37mm is the perfect size for this model. The lack of a second hands makes this watch one of the simplest, yet most beautifully executed, watches we have ever had. A pure and elegant dress watch, but throw this watch on a less formal strap like a black suede (We are including one!) you have yourself an incredibly versatile timepiece for all occasions and under the radar to most.
