The Watch
Paul Hasler founded DAVOSA Watches in 1881, situated in the Swiss Jura hills between Geneva and Basel they began specialising in watch assembly for many brands, their motif is a stylised compass rose, a historical nautical symbol. In 1946 with the help of his brother David Hasler they started to produce their own movements and watches for the American market, success continued throughout Europe and in 1974 they changed the company name to Hasler & Co. S.A. During the quartz crisis, they embraced the technology of producing quartz watches from 1975. As the demand for mechanical watches began to rise in 1987 they created a collection of chronographs with Valjoux 7750 and 7751 movements under the DAVOSA brand. In 1998, they presented their collection to Basel World for the first time. During the 2000s they continued to innovate and introduced a pilot watch celebrating 100yrs of the Wright brothers. In 2013 their Argonautic Dual time was attached to a special balloon which rose to 35,000 feet returning to earth completely functioning. They moved their head office to Herford in Germany in 2020, they were celebrating 140 years of watchmaking in 2021.
Here we have a 2018 DAVOSA Evo 1908 with a 36mm Rectangular case, polished and brushed surfaces transition with crisp edges, the bevel edge leads to a lug-to-lug length of 49.5mm and a case thickness of 12mm giving the watch an impressive wrist presence. On the right side is a signed crown with deep knurling for extra grip, and a domed sapphire crystal sits above a stunning blue, guilloche dial. An outer 60-minute chapter ring surrounds the applied dagger and Arabic numeral indexes marking the hours, at 3 o’clock a date window, and at 6 o’clock a recessed continuous seconds register. Broad sword hands are infilled with SuperLumiNova, at 12 o’clock the DAVOSA motif is precisely applied to the stunning dial. On the reverse a screwed-down exhibition case back, inside an automatic Sellita SW260-1, 31 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour. The watch comes fitted on its vintage 20mm leather strap with a signed buckle and comes with its DAVOSA presentation box and paperwork.
Personal Note
This has been a surprising favourite for me from this week's drop, the design and feel on the wrist are fantastic, oversized with a great wrist presence. It doesn't give the same feel as a classic Cartier Tank on the wrist, it feels more like a modern literal tank in a great way. The dial is mesmerising and keeps you admiring it when just checking the time, as you can tell, I really like this one, so someone snap it up!
