The Watch

Seiko's history began in 1881 when Kintaro Hattori established the K. Hattori retail and repair store. In 1892 Seikosha was established making wall clocks. 1895 saw the production of their first pocket watch. 1913 saw the launch of their first wristwatch, the Laurel. In 1924 the first Seiko was manufactured. Daini Seikosha (now Seiko Instruments Inc.) established in 1937. Seiko listed on the Tokyo stock exchange in 1949. The Suwa factory became independent and formed Suwa Seikosha Co. Ltd. (now Seiko Epson Corporation in 1959).

First introduced as the Seiko Sportsmatic 5 in 1963 it became an instant bestseller for Seiko. Seiko 5 is the longest continuously running sub-brand in the Seiko family. The 5 stands for the watches 5 principle attributes :

1.Diaflex (unbreakable mainspring),

2.Diashock (Seiko's shock-resistant design, equivalent to the Swiss "Incabloc"),

3.Automatic winding,

4.day/date indication, and

5.Water-resistant.

Our Seiko 5 Sports Military SNZG13J has a 42mm round bead-blasted stainless steel case. On the right side a crown. A slim bezel holds the flat Hardlex crystal. The black dial has an outer minute track with batons. Arabic numeral indices mark the hours coated in luminescence. At 3 o’clock a day-date window. Long fence hands are coated in Lumibrite luminescence.  On the reverse, a mineral exhibition screw-down case back. Inside an Automatic Seiko Cal. 7S36, 23 Jewels, 21,600 Beats per hour. This movement was first released to the market in 1996. Fitted to 22mm Seiko stainless steel bracelet with signed folding clasp.

Personal Note

The hidden gem within the Seiko 5 family, field/military design with a bracelet and oversized compared the usual sizes of the Seiko 5 at 42mm. Whilst not for everyone, it offers something a little bit more for the same price.
