The Watch
Here we have a 2017 Doxa SUB 300 Professional 50th Anniversary 820.10.351.10, Limited Edition of 300 pieces. The 43mm tonneau-shaped stainless steel case sits on the wrist like a cushion, it was designed and developed by Urs Eschle who was the product manager for the original Doxa Sub, with polished sides and brushed top surfaces transition with crisp edges towards the stubby lugs. A lug-to-lug length of 46mm and a case thickness of 13mm gives the watch an impressive wrist presence. At 3 o’clock a screw-down crown that fits recessed into the side of the case for protection. The unidirectional bezel has the U.S. Navy no decompression scales, with an outer depth scale in orange and the minute scale in black, to allow divers to gauge how much air was left in their tanks. The boxed sapphire crystal sits above the vibrant orange dial. Large double baton indexes with lume down their centres mark the hours, at 3 o’clock a framed date window. A small black hour hand with a larger black minute hand is complemented by a black second hand with a lume-filled square counterweight. This colour combination is highly visible when diving, a crosshair on the dial has text on the upper left side with “DOXA” and “automatic” printed, and on the lower right side, “SUB 300” and “Professional”. On the reverse, a screw-down case back with the DOXA motif in bas-relief in the centre, inside automatic ETA 2824-2, 25 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour. The watch comes fitted on a 20mm stainless steel “beads of rice” bracelet with brushed and polished finishing, secured with screws and has a folding signed clasp with a dive extension and the watch also comes with its Doxa presentation box and booklets.
Personal Note
We have been fortunate to have sold multiple limited editions Doxa SUB references over the years, most notably the Aqualung range in a variety of colours, however, this is one of the first 50th Anniversary Limited Editions we have had without any "badge" on the dial. You'll either love that or not about this reference, personally, it adds cleanliness to the design that flows perfectly, I wouldn't hesitate on this one if you are in the market for a great DOXA SUB 300.
The Brand
Doxa was established in 1889 in Le Locle Switzerland by Georges Ducommun. In 1921 Doxa became the supplier of dash clocks to Bugatti. In 1925 Georges became the vice president of the Swiss Horology Society. 1936 saw Georges' passing and the company was now in the hands of son-in-law Jaques Nardin the grandson of Ulysse Nardin. In 1944 the company was renamed “Manufacture des Montre DOXA”. The company was finally sold in 1997 to the Jenny family, transferring their headquarters to Bienne Switzerland.
