The Watch
Webster Clay Ball created Ball Watch in 1891 in Cleveland USA. As the American railroad expanded across the continent, it was agreed that the nation should be divided into 4 time zones to simplify timekeeping. 1883 saw the introduction of Standard Time and W.C.Ball was the first jeweller to use these new time signals, which brought accurate timekeeping to Cleveland. He created fortnightly inspections of the railroad guards' watches to ensure precise timekeeping.
Here we have a 2017 Ball Fireman Nightbreaker which is part of a collection of up to 18 dial combinations giving you many options to customise a timepiece to your liking. Each combination is available in black, silver, or blue. The polished and brushed 40mm stainless steel case gently curves over your wrist with tapered lugs. A lug to lug length of 48.5mm and a thickness of 12mm gives the watch an impressive wrist presence. On the right side is a large screw-down crown. A flat polished bezel holds a sapphire crystal AR coated for better viewing angles. The deep blue dial has concentric circles adding dimension and interest to the dial. An outer minute track has applied micro tritium gas tubes filled with luminescence marking the hours. At 3 o’clock a date window with a cyclops magnification, large 12, 4, and 8 with smaller 60-minute numerals create a quite unique combination. Sword hands and the red sweeping second hand have micro tritium gas tubes for luminescence. Text on the dial is precisely printed. On the reverse, a screw-down case back with a deeply stamped Ball Steam train motif. Inside an Automatic BALL RR1103, based on either an ETA 2824-2 or Sellita SW200-1, 25 or 26 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour. The watch comes fitted on its BALL 20mm stainless steel bracelet with a signed folding clasp and comes with its BALL presentation box and papers.
Personal Note
It's not every day we get a Ball watch on our desk, when we do we like to buy them and bring them to the site as they are truly fantastic watches for the price, no question about it! The build quality is on par with the likes of Oris, Longines, Doxa etc... But pre-owned these take a heavy hit, so I highly recommend trying to pick them up pre-owned like this one and save yourself some pennies.
