The Watch

Here we have a 2016 Sinn Navigation Chronograph 903 St B E with a 41mm polished and brushed stainless steel case, bevel-edged lugs with a lug-to-lug length of 48mm and a case thickness of 14.5mm give the watch an impressive wrist presence. Down the right side, we have the chronograph pushers and a signed screw-down crown in the centre. The crown at 10 o’clock enables you to make mathematical calculations and is used to rotate the slide rule bezel with a logarithmic scale, it also allows users to perform multiplication, division and cross-multiplication as well as other useful calculations such as fuel consumption, speed, distance and time, this watch is a true tool watch. A unidirectional bezel holds a domed sapphire crystal above a dark blue dial, around the outside, we have the logarithmic scale with k/m and mph precisely printed and highly legible. An applied 12 coated in Ivory luminance followed by applied batons covered in the same ivory luminance marking the hours, at 3 o’clock we have a 30-minute silver register, at 6 o’clock a 12-hour silver register and finally at 9 o’clock a continuous seconds silver register, the contrast of silver with dark blue is striking. Between the 4 and 5, we have a date window. Ivory sword hands infilled with luminance complemented with a white and red tipped chronograph hand complete this historical tool watch and at 12 o’clock we have the Sinn motif. On the reverse is a screw-down case back, inside an Automatic Sellita SW500, 25 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour, this movement is an alternative to the ETA / Valjoux 7750. The watch comes fitted on its 22mm leather strap with a signed buckle and comes with its Sinn presentation box and paperwork.

Personal Note

These have been referred to as the "Affordable Breitling" for many years, though I know multiple collectors who own this and actually prefer it to the Breitling, dare I say I agree and I'd be one of them? I think the design is fantastic and it truly gives an "if you know, you know" feel to the watch, perfect for a true watch nerd like us!

The Brand

In 1961 the pilot and flight instructor Helmet Sinn founded the Sinn watch company in Frankfurt am Main, which principally made watches that gave the user maximum functionality at a reasonable price, his Pilot watches became popular with his fellow pilots as they appreciated their build quality and precision. In 1985, Professor Dr Reinhard Furrer, a German physicist, wore the 140 S model on his wrist during the D-1 space lab mission, they continued their exploration of space with the 142 S in 1992. Dietrich Flade wore this watch during the Mir-92 mission. Later in 1993, the 142 space chronograph went on the second German Spacelab mission, the D-2. The mission was in space for 10 days, orbiting the Earth 160 times whilst on board the NASA Space Shuttle, Colombia. SINN was bought by Lothar Schmidt an engineer in 1994 renaming the company ‘Sinn Spezialuhren GmbH’. Over the years Schmidt used his engineering background to develop Ar-dehumidifying technology which is resistant to temperature. In 2011 it celebrated its 50th anniversary.
