The Watch
This is one of those cool watches with an equally cool story! So it goes that Squale found multiple, original, bakelite bezels in a drawer and decided to make a limited edition of 60 watches in 3 different colourways. The end result is incredible, it begs to be photographed and truly feels great on the wrist. It is quite a thick watch at 13mm but due to the shape of the 39.5mm case and the profile of the case back, it actually hugs the wrist well, even on a smaller wrist. Its polished and brushed round case has tapering lugs. The use of a Bakelite bezel here is what really makes the show! Also, the vintage colourways, of the 3 colours they used this is my favourite as it feels the most retro. The white dial has lumed squares indexes for hours and at 3 o’clock a date window. Broad fence hands have lume infill, its centre seconds have a square balance. On the reverse, a screw-down case back with Master etched into it, inside an automatic ETA 2824-2, 25 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour, it has hacking and is probably one of the most recognised watch movements, manufactured in 1982 it was based on the Eterna cal. 1427. The watch comes paired with a 20mm vanilla rubber strap plus an aftermarket 20mm NATO, Squale 20mm vintage style leather strap and a Squale 20mm rubber strap. The watch comes with its Squale presentation box, paperwork, watch roll, Squale penknife and spring bar removal tool with additional spring bars.
Personal Note
We have been fortunate to have sold a few of these over the years and now Page&Cooper is no longer in business we see them appear on the open market like this, before Page&Cooper would try to buy them up and increase the prices quite significantly. This is truly a fantastic watch providing vintage style and design but with modern build quality and reliability, what more could you want?
The Brand
Squale was founded by Charles von Büren in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, in 1946 as a manufacturer of watchcases and other components for other watch brands. In 1950 von Buren began to produce professional dive watches under the Squale name. During the 1960s and 70s, Squale produced cases for many brands including Prima, Blandford, Deman Watch, Berio, and Sinn. In 1974 Squale decided to enter the watch market in their own right. Unfortunately like many other watch brands during the “quartz crisis” they stopped production in 1989. Relaunching the brand in 2010 the Maggi family who were previously distributors of von Buren and Squale watches in Italy. Their headquarters can be found in Milan, with watch production in Grenchen in the Jura valley Switzerland.
