The Watch
Hans Wilsdorf founded Rolex in 1905 at the age of 24, along with Alfred Davis in London. In 1919 they moved their operation to Geneva, Switzerland. This move was brought about by high wartime taxes on Gold and Silver in the UK after the Great war 1914-1918. They were now closer to their suppliers in Bienne.
The Rolex Explorer was first introduced in 1953, shortly after the first successful summit of Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary. The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Chronometers used by the expedition were the forerunner of the explorer, albeit without the name. The Explorer 2 was specifically made for Spelunkers who are cave explorers this meant it was built with a particular specification and ultra-durability. The Ref 16570 was introduced in 1989. It has a 40mm stainless steel case satin-brushed sides and brushed top surfaces are exquisitely executed. The TwinLock screw-down crown has been crafted at Rolex and consists of a two gasket seal system. A stepped fixed bezel has 24-hour black markings. Sapphire crystal protects the black dial an outer minute track and applied disc, batons, and triangle at 12 o’clock with silver outlines mark the hours. All lumed in SuperLumiNova. At 3 o’clock a date window with cyclops magnification on the crystal. The Mercedes’s hands are complimented with the arrow hand for the 24-hour function made more visible with its red hand and white arrowhead. On the reverse, we have the screw-down case back. Inside the movement is protected from vibration and knocks by the ParaFlex shock absorber. The Automatic Rolex Cal. 3186 features 31 jewels and beats at 28,800 beats per hour. The movement is fitted with a Parachrom hairspring, which offers greater resistance to shocks and to variations in temperature. The watch comes fitted on its original 20mm Rolex Oyster bracelet with a signed clasp. Comes with a complete set of a Rolex presentation box and papers.
Personal Note
The Explorer family by Rolex is easily one of my favourites, both the Explorer 1 & 2! I do believe I will add both to the personal collection at some point in the future, for now, I have the privilege of sourcing and bringing to market such incredible examples like this. The condition of this one is a standout, the fact it is also a much later 16570 with the 3186 caliber and solid end links, probably one of the best to get just like the late 114270 Explorer 1. I wouldn't pass up on this as I suspect they are going to continue climbing at the crazy rate we have seen these past few years, rightfully so too.
