The Watch
Zenith was founded in 1865 by 22-year-old watchmaker Georges Favre-Jacot, their manufacturing was based in Le Locle Switzerland. Famous Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, who was the first person to reach the South Pole in 1911 and the North Pole in 1926, wore Zenith watches on his expeditions. In 1999 Zenith was purchased by LVMH (Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton) joining brands like TAG and Hublot. Zenith is one of the only Swiss manufacturers to still produce their own in-house movements.
Here we have a Ladies 1998 Zenith Elite 90/01.0050.680 with a 31.5mm stainless steel case. The gentle slope of the rounded tapered lugs sits comfortably on your wrist, a lug-to-lug length of 37.5mm and a case thickness of just 7mm creates a watch for any occasion. On the right side is a signed crown with an inset cabochon stone and a smooth bezel holds a flat sapphire crystal sitting above an attractive salmon dial. An outer minute track is precisely printed with Breguet Arabic-style numerals, applied Breguet Arabic style 12 and 6 and baton indexes mark the hours. At 3 o’clock a framed date window and at 9 o’clock a small seconds register perfectly balances the watch's form and function. Elegant sword hands complete this sophisticated dress watch. On the reverse an exhibition case back, inside an automatic Zenith Cal. 680, 26 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour, this movement was introduced at BaselWorld in 1994 the movement is still used by Zenith today in their Elite range of watches.
Personal Note
This watch was sold by Zenith in 1998 as a lady's watch, whilst it certainly looks most at home on a smaller lady's wrist, I truly believe a gentleman could pull this one off with confidence! The salmon dial contrasts beautifully against the smaller case size, then you flip it over and you are presented with the satisfying movement filling most of the case back in a beautiful fashion. It doesn't get much better than this at this price point especially.
