Points of Mention

This watch is sold as "Watch Only" and therefore comes with no original Zodiac box or original Zodiac paperwork. The watch comes paired with its original Zodiac signed stainless steel bracelet with a folding clasp. The watch is from Circa. 1975 and sold in worn, but fair condition, as you can see. The blue dial and indexes are in perfect condition. The watch comes with our 12-Months NON-Waterproof Warranty.

The Watch

Here we have a 1975 Zodiac SST Automatic 36000 Hi-Beat with a 39.5mm tonneau-shaped stainless steel case. The curve of the case ends with straight stubby lugs. A case thickness of 12mm and a lug-to-lug length of 44.5mm give the watch an impressive wrist presence. On the right side is a signed crown. An oval polished chrome bezel holds a flat crystal above a striking blue fumé dial. Transitioning from a pale blue to a dark blue across the centre for an unapologetically 1970s design. An outer minute chapter ring is precisely printed with lume markings which highlight the hours. At 3 o’clock a framed date window and at 9 o’clock a framed day window. Short baton hands have luminance tips complemented by a tapered sweeping second hand. At 12 o’clock the Zodiac motif. On the reverse, a screw-down case back. Inside an Automatic Zodiac Cal. 86, 17 jewels, 36,000 beats per hour, this movement can be tough to manually wind. It has hacking and a quick set date function by repeated pushing in of the crown. The automatic mechanism was a joint development of Doxa, Eberhard, Favre-Leuba, Girard-Perregaux, and Zodiac. The watch comes fitted on its original Zodiac 26mm chunky brushed stainless steel bracelet with a signed folding clasp.

Personal Note

This is such a fantastic 1970s example and one that everyone so far has looked at and said "It's a bit too much", to which I insist they put it on their wrist and the response is immediately different, all of a sudden they realise on the wrist it looks completely different, is incredibly comfortable and actually works so well for its size. If you are unsure, schedule an appointment and come and try it on for yourself.

The Brand

Zodiac was founded in 1882 by Ariste Calame. Their headquarters can be found in Locle Switzerland. The name Zodiac was patented in 1908 when he started to manufacture wristwatches. In 1953 we saw the introduction of the Sea Wolf, one of the first commercial purpose-built dive watches. On October 1, 2001, Fossil Inc. purchased the worldwide rights to the Zodiac brand name for approximately $4.7 million.
