The Watch

The Swiss luxury watch company Tissot from Le Locle, Switzerland, was established in 1853 by Charles Félicien Tissot and his son Charles-Emile. Under Charles-Emile’s direction, they manufactured pocket watches with parts from Russia and the United States. In 1915, the company began producing wrist watches. Between 1920 and 1977, Tissot produced its own movements.

The 1971 Tissot Automatic PR 516 GL has a 36mm stainless steel tonneau case that is bezel-less, giving it a sporty profile. Lug to lug length of 42.5mm and a thickness of 13.5mm gives the watch an impressive wrist presence. A domed crystal protects the blue dial with a white chapter ring featuring Baton markers that are partly raised, allowing the hour hand to move underneath them. A red seconds hand contrasts perfectly with the white hand. A date window sits at the 3 o’clock position. Inside we have an Automatic Tissot Cal.784-2, 21 jewels,18,000 beats per hour. The watch comes fitted on its original integrated stainless steel bracelet with a signed clasp.

Personal Note

A really stunning watch and example of pure 1970s style, it won't be for everyone but that is the joy of 1970s design and especially watches. Don't be tricked by the sizes listed below, due to the integrated design and thicker case this watch really does wear like a 38/39mm on the wrist and it fits beautifully.
