The Watch
Here we have a 1970s Zenith Pilot Automatic 01-0020-382 with a 36.5mm tonneau-shaped stainless steel case, chamfered edges and broadsides lead to a lug-to-lug length of 40.5mm and a case thickness of 12mm ensuring a comfortable fit on your wrist. On the right side, is a signed crown. A smooth bezel holds a domed crystal above a sunburst Blue Fumé dial, applied baton indexes have lume tips and lume pips marking the hours, and at 3 o’clock a framed date window. Elegant slender baton hands with lume stripe down its centre complemented by a tapered sweeping second hand, at 12 o’clock we have the Zenith motif and at 6 o’clock “Pilot” completes this dynamic quintessentially 1970s timepiece. On the reverse is a screw-down case back, inside an Automatic Zenith Cal. 2572PC, 28,800 beats per hour. The watch comes fitted on its comfortable integrated stainless steel bracelet with a signed folding clasp.
Personal Note
Anyone who knows me knows that I absolutely love Zenith and wear my personal 1970s Defy a lot, this is why whenever a great-looking 70s Zenith with an integrated bracelet comes up, I have to own it and bring it to the site! This is a wonderful example and the dial is mesmerising, super comfortable on the wrist and looks far more expensive than it actually is.
The Brand
Zenith was founded in 1865 by 22-year-old watchmaker Georges Favre-Jacot, their manufacturing was based in Le Locle Switzerland. Famously Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, who was the first person to reach the South Pole in 1911 and the North Pole in 1926, wore Zenith watches on his expeditions. In 1999 Zenith was purchased by LVMH (Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton) joining brands like TAG and Hublot. Zenith is one of the only Swiss manufacturers to produce their own in-house movements still, their most recognised movement is the El Primero it was released in 1969, went into production in 1975 and was re-issued in 1986.
