The Watch
Here we have a 1970s Spaceman Audacieuse Vialux Automatic, the 37.5mm square angular case is chrome plated, with a lug-to-lug length of 44mm and a case thickness of 14mm ensuring a comfortable fit on your wrist. On the right side a crown with deep knurling for extra grip. An angular crystal that sits above a maroon-red dial, three Tritium square indexes mark the hours with an unusually framed vertical day in German/date. The broad baton hands have a maroon-red infill complemented by an orange sweeping second hand. The Spaceman Audacieuse motif sits on the dial in a futuristic font, a nice touch. It reminds me of my childhood watching the Gerry Anderson sci-fi series like Joe 90 or Space 1999. On the opposite side, we have VIALUX Automatic Swiss Made T<25. On the reverse a snap-off case back, inside we have an automatic AS Cal. 2066 movement, 25 jewels beating at 21,600 beats per hour, this movement was produced from 1969 until 1978. Fitted with a 35mm Spaceman signed brushed and polished integrated bracelet with a folding clasp, it will fit up to a 7 1/4-inch wrist.
Personal Note
This will certainly not be to everyone's taste but I absolutely love this watch! It is so clearly of the era when space exploration was at the forefront of people's minds, it is having a bygone era on your wrist and feeling what that excitement must have been like and the possibilities were endless for the future.
The Brand
Designed by Andre Le Marquand, a designer, and artist who has the “Spaceman” featured in the Modern Art Museum of New York. It is a unique design inspired I am sure by the spaceman helmet. He Introduced the watch in 1974, he licensed the design which enabled many brands to create their own version including Zeno, Omax, Fortis, Kotana and Vialux.
