The Watch

Achilles Ditesheim at the age of 19 founded LAI Ditesheim & Freres SA in 1881. With the help of 6 watchmakers, he built a workshop in the small village of La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. In 1905 he renamed the company Movado meaning “always in motion” in the international language of Esperanto. In 1947 Nathan George Horwitt created the single dot watch dial. In 1960 Horwitts original design became the first watch dial ever to be accepted by the Museum of Modern Art, New York. In 2017 Movado Group purchased the Olivia Burton brand based in London. It is one of the fastest-growing fashion watch and jewellery brands in the UK. October 2018 Movado Group acquired MVMT who specialises in selling quartz watches, sunglasses, and jewellery. The Movado Group also owns Concord, Ebel.

This Movado Kingmatic S has a 34mm stainless steel round case. Elegant slim straight lugs with a lug to lug length of 40mm and a thickness of just 9mm ensures a comfortable fit on the wrist. A polished bezel holds a domed crystal. The silver sunburst dial has an attractive radiating crosshatch pattern chapter ring. Slim applied baton indexes mark the hours. Elegant steel dauphine hands and sweeping center seconds hand completes the dial. At 12 o’clock an applied Movado logo. Above 6 o’clock a printed “Kingmatic S”. On the reverse a screw-down case back with a Kingmatic medallion in the center. Symbolising Helios riding a four-horse chariot bringing out the sun each morning, also known as the “Sun Chariot”. Inside an Automatic Movado Cal. 395, 28 Jewels, 21,600 beats per hour. In production between 1962 and 1967. Fitted on a Movado 18mm stainless steel beads of rice bracelet with a signed folding clasp.
