The Watch
Here we have a 1950s Mido Multifort Powerwind 1801 "Wyoming" with its “Oversized” 37.5mm round stainless steel case, curved thick tapered lugs with a case thickness of 11mm and lug to lug length of 45mm ensure a comfortable fit on the wrist. On the right side, is a recessed crown, and a smooth bezel holds a domed crystal. The sunburst grey dial has an attractive cross with a multi-directional texture, applied trapezoid and dagger indexes, and the faceted sides catch and play with the light as you rotate your wrist. At 3 o’clock a framed date window, steel dauphine hands complemented with a fine sweeping centre seconds hand complete this striking dial. At 12 o’clock an applied “Mido” with “Multifort” is printed underneath, and at 6 o’clock “Powerwind” is printed. On the reverse, a screw-down case back, inside an automatic Mido Cal. 917 PC, 17 jewels, 18,000 beats per hour, the movement was in production from 1954 until 1960. The watch comes fitted on an 18mm suede strap.
Personal Note
One I'll be sad to see go again and one I'll be surprised if it hangs around... This is the epitome of what Mido was all about, insanely beautiful design and incredibly well built and yet still can be found for a stupendous deal! I really believe that Mido, Movado and Nivada are some of the most slept-on vintage watch brands, give it a few years and people will realise.
The Brand
Mido was founded by Mr Georges Schaeren in Switzerland in 1918, his first watches represented car radiators in shape and were advertised as motorist watches. One made in Platinum was given to the King of Spain in 1927. In 1934 we saw the launching of the Multifort line which marked a milestone in the history of Mido watches, it was one of the first antimagnetic watches with a self-winding movement and was built with water and shock resistance. The Multifort was the best-selling Mido watch from the 1930s to the 1950s. In 1954 Mido introduced the Powerwind Automatic which reduced the winding components from 17 to 7 a true feat of engineering.
